United States Department of Agriculture specialists advise using homemade fruit juices in winter for jellies and convenient storage. Juice is pressed, heated to 110 degrees F, and packed in hot jars, bottles, or cans. Sterilization steps include a cotton stopper, boiling water for 40 minutes at 165 degrees F, then sealing with cork and optional paraffin or wax.
Corn sirup may be used to supplement sugar in putting up fruits and in making jellies jams and marmalades and fruit butters. It can be used in canning to improve flavor and texture of preserves.
Specialists of the United States Department of Agriculture advise using varying amounts of corn syrup with sugar to modify flavors. They recommend small initial uses to suit family taste and note it pairs well with strong fruits like pineapple and cherries. The amount depends on fruit type and syrup strength.
In Americus Georgia a jury ruled that liquor carried in a pocket is not contained in the automobile. The case involved a car seized and condemned for transporting liquor and was later restored to its owner.
Savannah reports a record ship launching month for August from multiple yards. The Foundation Company will launch four mine sweepers valued at $200,000 each for France, with eighteen keels laid. Georgia Engineering and Construction will launch two to three sea-going tugs at $150,000 each for the United States. Albany July 11 New Yorks receipts and expenditures for the fiscal year ended June 30 were the largest in state history. Receipts totaled 76 3 million, about 15 million more than last year. Expenditures rose to 74 6 million, up 14 00 000 from the prior period. In Broxville Tenn six letter carriers aided a widow Mrs R T H Bell saving five acres of wheat by forming a rescue committee.
