A big fire in Kittanning Armstrong County destroyed the Central School building with $500000 damage. No injuries were reported. The blaze started on the roof and spread through the brick structure, involving 36 classrooms and cafeteria and home economics departments.
In Kansas City six helicopters join a massive search for 9 year old Denise Clinton who was abducted from a hotel by a bandit. Volunteers and officers sweep rural areas north of the city while the FBI issues a pickup order for 32 year old Robert Lee Hays on an old federal unlawful flight warrant.
The U S spacecraft Mariner 4 chases a Mars rendezvous next Wednesday at 9870 mph. Four days later it will intercept Mars orbit and photograph up to 21 close ups. JPL says it was 130,036,080 miles from Earth and 1,187,572 miles from Mars at 6 p m Friday. The flyby will occur within 6000 miles of the planet.
About two thirds of the state's 5.8 million motorists will undergo periodic physical examinations by end of 1970 under a resumed program. 5,000 drivers will be notified in two months for 60 day re examinations starting with those aged 35 or over.
Julie Martin of Lexington received a brief note from her 12 year old daughter Blair at a summer camp. Blair explained that campers must write to parents before they can eat, and she wrote to satisfy the rule.
The Indiana Parking Authority opens a new 40 stall metered lot on the former Streams Funeral Home site near Church St and Gompers Ave, adding to 20 and 40 stall lots already in use. Chairman Robert Bud Baird and borough officials cite strong public use and revenue from previous lots, with rates up to 1.25 dollars for three hours.
Indicated acid and iron levels in Two Lick Creek spurred state health officials to inspect the creek and its tributaries ten to twelve miles north of the Clymer Water Co. pump station. Officials reported a hoped return to normal levels and noted longer processing times as testing continued. The company serves about 14 500 residents in Indiana Borough White Township and is expanding its Two Lick Pump Station capacity.
The Senate and House approved a landmark Medicare program for 19 million older Americans, expanding Social Security to boost checks. The Senate passed 68 to 21, sending the bill to conference with the House which approved its version 313 to 115.

U S Phantom jets bagged two Communist MIGs 40 miles south of Hanoi while U S Air Force planes destroyed two bridges and five buildings at an ammunition depot 85 miles northwest of Hanoi.
