The State Employment office reports ordinary employment conditions for the week ending July 7. favorable weather boosted outdoor work and common laborer hiring, but mid week holiday and heavy rains slowed state highway projects and offset gains in construction progress.
The First Baptist Church marks 70 years as a recognized Baptist body with a week of services led by Rev. EB Ferguson. Women’s Missionary Society hosts Monday, speakers from Grove City and Vandergrift on consecutive evenings. The Practical Bible Training School group performs on open night, Bible School Night features Rev. Clair Clawson, and Friday closes with Young Women’s Missionary Society led by Rev. Seely.
Washington July 7 Mrs Clem Shaver wife of the soon to be retired DNC chairman openly opposes Al Smith. She calls Smith a wet Tammyite and her remarks embarrass party leaders while her husband remains mum on his position.
Cameron Smith a Kansas City attorney was held for court by Justice Ira Edmundson on a conspiracy to indict charge. He and two others allegedly pursued false prosecutions linked to the mythical Baker Estate of Philadelphia, an estate said to not exist by Pennsylvania officials. Knights of Malta anniversary service urged at M E Church with attendance from all commands and wives invited. Meet at Malta Hall 10 30 A M or church 11 O'clock.
Announcement said the detour on Hawspike route 86 Seward to Johnstown remains in place. After a conference with W R Ross Idagedorn Construction Co supervisor, slides from recent rains delay lifting the detour. A new detour on route 28 between Matthews farm and Cramer East Wheatfield will open next week as a mile of concrete road begins.
Rio de Janeiro July 7 All Brazil was abuzz over the nonstop Rome to Brazil flight of Italian fliers Captain Ferrar in and Major Carlo Del Prete. A grand welcome is planned on their Natal arrival after a landing at Touros damaged their Savoia-64. They had crossed about 4417 miles in just under 52 hours, averaging roughly 109 mph, setting a new world long distance record.
The Ku Klux Klan files an appeal in federal court from a dismissal of their suit against five banished members in Pennsylvania. The Klan seeks $500,000 in damages and aims to enjoin interference with Klan activities. A July 23 court date is noted to obtain Judge Thomson’s approval of the appeal proceedings.
Two day naturalization hearings led by U. S. Attorney B. M. Oldexton concluded Friday afternoon. One hundred ten aliens applied for papers and sixty eight passed the required grades.
Chappy Evans formerly of Punxsutawney and active in the tensorial business for 15 years has located in Indiana. His shop sits on South Fifth Street next to the Uber store. Indiana figures on an itinerary for a motor coach tour by members of the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce Wholesalers Council. July 10 and 11 visits include Tarentum Kittanning and Punxsutawney among others with over 25 wholesalers aboard. The six tours cover a 76 mile radius and focus on direct customer visits with limited entertainment.
Frank S. Rodkey of Erie son of Mr and Mrs A H Rodkey of Decker's Point sailed from Montreal on the S S Laureatie July 7 to tour the British Isles Belgium Holland Switzerland Germany Italy Algiers Spain and France and will return via New York.
Edward P. Weeks of Grandview caught a 28 inch and a 16 inch brown trout along with smaller ones while fishing near Warren on July 4. The trout were displayed at the Deposit Bank for several hours yesterday.

Washington dispatch notes political wind shifts after Kansas City and Houston conventions. Leaders from both parties privately concede prohibition may dominate the November race, with some hopeful it will settle the matter while others fear uncertain outcomes. Dr Hubert Work calls prohibition not an issue publicly.
John Henry Meara and Captain Charles Collyer, American explorers aiming to circle the globe in under 23 days by air and sea, arrived in Moscow from Konigsberg. Their route includes Yokohama as the final destination before boarding to the Pacific Coast, crossing the U S back to New York. Meara once held the fastest around the world record. Collyer pilots the expedition.
Mr and Mrs R C McMillen of Pittsburgh announce the marriage of their daughter Mrs Anna Myrtle Lydick to Raymond A Collins. The ceremony was by Rev Galen B Roger at the First Church of the Brethren with 20 guests. The couple will reside at 5420 Avondale Street Pittsburgh.
Elgin R. Howard 36, of Gibsonia Pa, son of William and Mrs. Howard Blairsville Rd No. 1, employed by Duquesne Light, died after contacting a high tension line while repairing a broken street light on Gold Way Pittsburgh. Rescue squads, firemen, and physicians declared him dead after 4 am.
Washington Pa July 7 INS a rich natural gas strike was found one mile north of Amity on the J J Horn farm by Manufacturers Light and Heat Company a Columbus gas and electric suburb. The well reportedly yields 7 009 000 cubic feet from a 50 foot sand. The strike is in newly developed territory and is expected to spur further drilling in the area.
The annual Ant and Bush reunion gathered in Guval Grove on July with a church program of music recitations by children and brief addresses by Rev. Walman of Marian Genter and Rev. Troutmin of Smicksburg. The day ended with greetings and renewed friendships plus plans for the next festival and a church benefit at Edgewood on Saltsburg Road July 10th.

London July 7 In a daring effort Lieut Shyberg the Swedish aviator who rescued Lundborg from the ice floe where five survivors of the Italia disaster were marooned aims to rescue the remaining isolated men. He landed on the ice with one man aboard leaving food medicines and supplies for Viglieri and four others as a wide search continued.
The Countess of Northesk filed suit in Scottish courts over alleged injury to her child’s estate. A London based chorus member Brown linked to her pre marriage life was named in the court record. The home address cited is Bar N.Y. and Parisian arrivals were noted related to the ongoing dispute.

James Sheehe and Frank Moreau faced a cloudburst near Rainbow Gardens, McKeesport, as waters rose knee deep for miles. Two hundred cars were swept down the stream, many buried in sand and mud. Sheehe recovered his Ford roadster half a mile downstream. Both youths and families endured a dramatic flood event before returning home.
London July 7 The theories on Capt Alfred Loewenstein the Belgian financier who vanished with his plane remained unsettled. A door-opening accident theory faltered after tests in a Fokker showed air pressure would likely prevent an inadvertent exit. The suicide theory was ridiculed by friends as inconsistent with his orderly finances and character. The latest idea, that he staged the disappearance, was also dismissed as unlikely.
In Dessau Germany German aviators Johann Ristiex and Win Zimmerman set a world aviation endurance record after flying for 58 hours 38 minutes. They took off Thursday and were aloft until mid afternoon today in a Junker aircraft similar to the Bremen.
