National totals show 542 traffic deaths during a 78 hour July Fourth observance surpassing prior three day marks. Howard Pyle of the National Safety Council warns drivers must improve skills as fatalities near the four day 557 record set in 1963.
Gov Scranton weighs a General Assembly backed bill to raise lawmakers pensions by fifty percent and possibly veto it over concerns some pensions would exceed salaries. Aides say he has not decided as the chamber pushed through the measure before a two week recess.
An RAF Transport Command four engine plane with 43 people aboard crashed in a field near Dorchester Oxfordshire. Fire officials said there were no survivors and the aircraft disintegrated with a large orange fireball reported by a witness.

Seven colleagues injured and three critically in a hydrogen fueled explosion at the Harvard MIT Cambridge electron accelerator center. Dr Joseph Szymanski in charge of the bubble chamber helped smother a colleague’s burning clothes after the blast. Center director Dr M Stanley Livingston said there is no radioactivity and the cause is unknown. Damages estimated at $1 million and repairs will delay experiments for months.
State Department spokesman said two North Vietnamese missile sites are nearly finished and two more are in an advanced stage. He found no evidence of missiles at the completed sites but said testing is only a matter of time. Work is concentrated around Hanoi and Haiphong.
The United States recognizes Col. Houari Boumedienne's government in Algeria which seized power from Ahmed Ben Bella on June 19 and notes no interruption in diplomatic relations. President Johnson sent a reply to Boumedienne after Boumedienne's Independence Day message.
In Saigon area, about 2,500 troops including over 1,000 from the U.S. 173 Airborne Brigade joined Vietnamese and Australian forces for a second joint operation in the D Zone. Contact with the Viet Cong remained minimal, despite a Monday B52 bombing. items found included love letters to a Viet Cong soldier, WWII Japanese water cans, and a VC illustrated magazine.

Indiana County police report four separate highway accidents during the Fourth of July weekend. Nine people were injured and hospitalized, with one serious case and others listed as satisfactory after treatment at local facilities. The worst crash on Route 119 near Marion Center involved Francis Weiland 41 and Jerry Surloff 22, plus a truck driver Harold Barett 27, with seven in the Weiland vehicle injured. Martin Weiland 66 was seriously injured and transported to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Other Weiland occupants and Harold Barett received treatment at Indiana Hospital and local dispensaries.
Malawi Prime Minister Hastings Banda accused Communist China of spending millions to corrupt African leaders at a news conference marking Malawi's first anniversary of independence. He argued the money would be better spent feeding the Chinese people.
A young man named Leroy Francis Scott, about 24, armed with a repeating rifle, killed two men and wounded two officers before dying at dawn after a five hour wooded manhunt. Patrolman James Hintemeyer and Charles Schweinberg, both wounded, described firing on him as he raised his rifle. Victims include former pro football player Coleman McDonough and Aaron Godfrey. Scott's motive appeared linked to a dispute over his attentions to Godfrey's daughter Ruth, 16.
Sherry Ann Trinkley, a five year old from Alverda, is in Miners Hospital Spangler for observation after surviving a 20 foot fall during the holiday weekend. She reportedly crawled onto a sunroof, toppled over the ledge, landed on soft earth, then ran to her father Benjamin Trinkley.
Ramona Franco de Portola, burned over 70 percent of her body, was rescued by Liga International doctors during an Independence Day mercy mission to Sonora. Five doctors airlifted her to White Memorial Hospital where she faces a 50 50 chance of survival after two months in a mud hut enduring 115 degree heat and third‑degree burns.
