Police report actress Carole Landis took sleeping tablets in her home. Detectives found four bottles, an empty bottle, a satin ribbon with the Lord's Prayer, and a note to her mother. Captain Emmett Jones said it was a death by own action.
Democratic chairman J Howard McGrath urged loyal Democrats to unite the party amid Eisenhower’s stance. He predicted President Truman would be nominated on the first ballot at the Democratic national convention. The statement framed unity as strengthening leadership and avoided implying divides within the party. In a separate note, actress Carole Landis was found dead, reportedly after a period of illness, with a note to her mother and plans for a film project in England.
Five new names appeared on the Indiana County Jail docket over the Fourth of July week end. Jack Taylor 18 Graceton and Albert Santolini 16 Graceton were lodged after attempting to annoy two girls. Leroy Fulmer Indiana RD 1 was arrested for drunkenness after climbing into a truck and falling asleep. Ralph Palmer 31 Blacklick jailed on four charges of surety of the peace. Noble Clawson 41 Luciusboro jailed for disorderly conduct given 30 day remand.
Thom as F. Doyle, 25, of Marion Center, was charged with hit and run driving, reckless driving, and driving under the influence after crashing into a parked vehicle on Wayne Avenue and fleeing toward Marion Center. State Police arrested him. he was jailed in Indiana County Jail awaiting a Monday hearing. The damaged car, rented by Robert Ryncosky of Latrobe, sustained about $30 in damage.
The Associated Press reports a three day Independence Day period saw the U S death toll in violent incidents exceed 500 with 206 traffic deaths 184 drownings 66 miscellaneous fatalities and four from fireworks Pennsylvania led states with 44 deaths including 23 traffic fatalities 14 drownings six miscellaneous and one fireworks. Clear skies and heat drew millions to lakes and vacation areas as auto travel neared 30 million trips.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower publicly rejects any nomination for public office saying he cannot accept party nomination or run in partisan politics. Despite his no, Democratic leaders including James Roosevelt press on with caucus plans in Philadelphia to explore a unity ticket.
Evan R. Jones aged 27 of Altar died Friday afternoon while riding home from Indiana State Teachers College. A tire blew on his motorcycle on Cresson Mountain and a passing motorist took him to Altoona Hospital where he died of a fractured skull. He was a former trumpet player with Ina Ray Hutton Band and Had his own popular dance band. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Fours Co. Ind. plans a new all steel one story plant on East Brown Street Blairsville. Grading is underway on recently acquired property. The 10,500 square foot building will house the latest sewing equipment. Current employment is 36. post construction staffing is expected at about 100.
Information filed today against Richard K. Pietsch of Cleveland Ohio for illegal passing yesterday afternoon on Philadelphia Street according to Indiana Police. Fish-N-Chips priced at 50 cents. Ricupero's noted.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey makes no public comment as Dwight D. Eisenhower is counted out of the race. Dewey ends a three day self imposed ban on work today and will spend three weeks at his farm mixing campaign organization state duties and rest.
Berlin reports say Russian and allied forces tightened land controls on trucks entering Western Berlin amid a blocked sector stand off. London sources say the U S Britain and France will issue separate protests to Russia over the 18 day blockade. Paris cites a British embassy document alleging a Moscow directed plan to eject western powers from Berlin. Major General George P. Hays says no unusual safety measures are planned. The Socialist Unity Party dismisses the Paris report as too stupid to discuss.
Lawrence Capipana of Ernest had his life savings of 2000 dollars returned after four teen age boys were apprehended by county authorities. Sheriff Jeffries Deputy McMullen and Detective Washington led the investigation. One boy confessed after five hours of questioning and named the others. The money, all in fifty dollar bills, was found hidden in a chimney in Indiana. Three suspects were from Ernest and one from Indiana. The theft occurred after a picnic near Ernest on June 27 when Capipana was robbed and chased by the youths.
Austin P. Anderson, proprietor of Anderson's Shoe Store, spent two weeks in Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. He has returned to his Water Street home and is improving with a plan for rest and a full recovery, likely spending most of the month at his Sleepy Hollow cottage.

Dames W Streams age 24 and Donald R Byers age 20 both of Indiana pleaded guilty this morning before a local squire to charges of attempted larceny of a motor vehicle and tampering with a motor vehicle. They were caught last Friday night trying to steal Milton Rounim’s autos. Streams also faced a detainer from Pennsylvania DOJ over a parole violation.
William Nocei son of Mir c and Mrs Frank Nocei of Indiana was injured Saturday afternoon while riding his bicycle when struck by a car driven by Rocen Vanity of Indiana. He was taken to Indiana Hospital for a skull X ray and scalp injuries and admitted as a patient.
A car driven by William D. White of Indiana Route 4 and another vehicle operated by Juha Ports of Lucernemines collided Sunday night at the Grant Street and Wayne Avenue intersection in Indiana Borough. Police said the damage was about $90 with no injuries.
George Lee, 60, was admitted to Indiana Hospital at 11 30 p m Saturday after an unknown motorist struck him while walking along the highway near Arcadia. He suffered lacerations of the left ear and body bruises. State Police at the Indiana substation are conducting an investigation.
Israel rejected Count Bernadotte's Palestine peace reply on extending the truce. Foreign Minister Sherlok delivered a 1000 word reply opposing any immigration limits and urging a new approach. Bernadotte would meet Arabs in Cairo and return to hear a Jewish reply on the extension. Arab leaders predicted renewed fighting when the four week truce ends Friday.
Seven Blairsville Born ministers signed a statement opposing all forms of gambling in the borough. They declare gambling harmful to youth, character, and community reputation and urge authorities and citizens to join a cleanup effort.
The Board of Directors of Camp William Penn, Incorporated will hold its regular meeting tomorrow evening in the CBC office in Indiana. Members of S. UL V. Aux. meet at Robinson's Funeral Home tonight at 7:30 to hold services for Mrs. Nora Hildebrand.
Washington July 6 AP The United States demanded the Berlin blockade be lifted and presented the note to Soviet Ambassador Alexander Panyushkin. Britain and France handed similar notes in London and Paris as Marshall pressed for immediate action.
Herbert McCullough age 22 of Blairsville suffered a fracture to a ring finger and a severed lip when his car collided with a vehicle driven by Michael Chesler of Wilkinsburg on the William Penn Highway just east of Blairsville. Damage to both cars was about 2000 dollars. McCullough was admitted to Indiana Hospital in guarded condition. Chesler was uninjured.
Governor Tuck said he would attend the anti Truman Democrats pre convention caucus in Philadelphia. The plan was to select a candidate for the Democratic nomination and did not specify Eisenhower by name. Virginia's 26 convention votes would be cast for Eisenhower per Friday's state convention instructions. Roosevelt of California pressed for accord on the Philadelphia caucus call.
Blairsville resident C M Rapine aged 53 was struck by a vehicle Saturday afternoon while crossing the street. He received a deep forehead wound and injuries to his right hand and left leg after treatment by a Blairsville physician. The driver was Charles R News houser of Blairsville R D 2 who transported the victim to the doctor. Regular July meeting of Council 598 hosted by IOOF Mall on Thursday July 8 at 8 00 p m with Kenneth R Orr as secretary.
Frank Hague former Jersey City mayor and state Democrat leader called on President Truman to request General Eisenhower accept the Democratic presidential nomination. Hague said New Jersey would cast its 48 votes for an out and out draft if asked, and would stay Democratic by over 200,000 voters otherwise. He noted Eisenhower said he could not accept a nomination and urged the President to seek a nonpartisan service role for the general.
