A plea argues for federal uniform marriage and divorce laws to curb rising separations. The author asserts 619 divorces per 10 000 marriages last year and warns that without radical reform the civilizational foundation and the home will deteriorate.

A bandstand near the Mar Street bridge in Findlay Ohio collapsed during July 4 celebrations as hundreds watched fireworks. Several people including Mary Bentley Eva Price Martha Nelson Mrs McDonald Grace McDonald and Marie Harhart sustained injuries from the fall. English Swedish mobilization news also notes a pending proclamation for army mobilization in Sweden within a week as the Zeppelins committee evaluates Norwegian concerns.
Maxim Gorky, living at Kokola Finland coast, refuses a lucrative U S lecture tour to aid in emancipating Russia. A recognized reader of constitutionalists, he is visited daily by Russians and donates most of his large income to the cause.
Gorky admires President Roosevelt and U S efforts to end the war but, from a Russian view, peace would be a misfortune. He says the war with Japan, costly as it is, has been a blessing, exposing the regime’s flaws and triggering unseen changes.
Philadelphia July 6 Committee of seventy and committee of nine, active in the gas lease fight, condemn Governor Penny Packer's choice of David Martin as state commissioner of insurance to tie Durham. They call the appointment an affront to citizens seeking reform and urge action to oust those who dominate the Republican organization.

An explosion at the Vivian coal mine in West Virginia killed three miners and injured several others. About 200 men were employed at the Tidewater Coal and Coke company mine located two miles from Vivian, with recovery efforts proceeding at the hospital six miles away. The authorities note a heavy shock as the likely cause while dust ignition remains disputed. TF L. Sechan presides the company.
Warren Ohio July 6 George Parker and William Jones, two Niles youths, eating what they believed were mushrooms, are in critical condition after a trip along the Mahoning river. Harry Hoffman, a companion, summoned help from this city. The incident follows a rash of mushroom foraging in the region and prompts medical caution about wild fungi.
Ty Build Locomotive Works in New Castle will invest 1,000,000 for plant improvements to equip a locomotive manufacturing facility. Local capitalists back the enterprise and support the project in the Pennsylvania engineering plant expansion.

Gustave A. Closson of Morrisville Pa confessed to poisoning his two sons in separate meals. Eleven year old Walter died May 19 after ingesting poisoned beer. Henry, 9, survived a bread poison attempt. Closson, a railroad crossing flagman, cited lack of usefulness of the boys and held $880 life insurance on Walter.
In Wilmington Delaware on July 6 George Derm a factory hand was killed by 18 year old Robert Fenni mere after a quarrel with a negro man brought to a bare. Fenni mere fired a pistol believed to hold blanks. four blanks and one live shell were found. Fenni mere surrendered stating he fired to frighten the man and did not know a ball cartridge was loaded.
