Dien Bien Phu Hit By U S Planes

U S warplanes attacked Dien Bien Phu and the airfield near the Laotian border. Eight F108 Thunderchiefs led a first strike on barracks destroying six buildings and damaging four others with 24 tons of bombs and rockets. A follow up strike hit the Dien Bien Phu airfield with 34 tons of bombs and missiles, cratering the runway center and destroying twelve more buildings.

Pay Now Among Highest Raises Senate House Bills

Bills approved in both chambers boost expense allowances for 209 representatives and 50 senators from 3000 to 4800 dollars annually and raise pensions by 50 percent. Eviction Gun Fight Ends in Fatal Shootout

In Norfolk, police killed Fred Williams after a 20 minute gun battle as he fought eviction with a 45 caliber automatic. Weather Satellite In Orbit

Cape Kennedy Florida AP The TIROS 10 weather satellite began orbit to record birth and movement of hurricanes typhoons and storms. It joined TIROS 7 8 and 9 on space patrol as a forerunner of an operational system planned for 1966. The 290 pound craft rode a Delta rocket into a north south orbit above 400 miles. Initial spin was fast but ground signals slowed it to 10 rpm and all systems later reported normal. The mission will provide thousands of photographs daily via a two craft plan system with Plan A B C allocations for hurricane monitoring and weather coverage. Ground controllers expect first usable cloud pictures by Saturday or Sunday.
