A fire caused by smoke and a burning pipe damaged the living area of Archie’s home on Mabon Street. The blaze, discovered by Mahonee Lytle as she rested in a room two months after confinement, spread between rooms and required neighbors to rescue a resident later cared for by Mrs. Daugherty.
General Obregon elected president yesterday in an uncontested poll. Returns show Socialists and Social Democrats backing Obregon as they gain in both houses of the national assembly. Election reported unmarred by disturbances.
Miss Barbara Pearson of Ashland has word her pocketbook lost on an airplane over Washington will be returned. It was found by William Owens on a roof and identified by airport officials with a certificate of eight.
American Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes is received by President Von Hindenburg in Berlin. American Ambassador Jacob Gould Schurman will host a banquet tonight with members of the present and previous cabinets in attendance.
Berlings Oil transfers Barr service station to McWehoy and Johnson. New ownership continues current staff and management. Consideration stated as public and humbleness noted in brief report.
A Wednesday curb market sale is planned for tomorrow morning, July 3, with favorable weather attracting farmers to bring garden produce and other goods to the curb for sale. Several vendors are expected to participate, offering fruits and intrawberries among their offerings.
In Cleveland Ohio a couple tied the knot in a small ceremony at St Mary’s Chapel with Monsignor Baume presiding. The groom was Mannion of Boutox Massachusetts and the bride was from Cleveland. The wedding reflected local church traditions and family connections.
Herbert Hoover began what may be his final full week as Secretary of Commerce. He plans to resign to President Coolidge next week and head to California for homecoming events and his nomination notification. Hoover met with Commerce advisers and aimed to tidy up departmental affairs before leaving Washington.
In Buffalo on July 2 a barged canal near Pendleton was used to recover the bodies of James Driscoll 24 Beach Ridge and Marie Smith 24 Pendleton who drowned when their speedboat capsized during a turn. A third death occurred when a Wendleville volunteer fire department grappling search collided a milk truck fatally killing 18 year old fireman Robert Urban.
F W Lowman of Marion Center was arrested by Patrolman Conner after a Saturday noon crash at the corner of 8th and Washington streets. A physician diagnosed intoxication. A .38 revolver and extra shells were found, along with a loaded .32 rifle and a quart of moonshine. A hearing was scheduled for that afternoon.
At San Quentin William Edward Hickman, killer of Marian Parker, refused to explain the motive for yesterday’s savage fight with cellmate Joseph Troche. Troche, a condemned murderer, was beaten with a stool leg until guards intervened. he was taken to the prison hospital and would not reveal the cause. Meanwhile in Oakland 17-year-old Erna Janoschek, dubbed the girl Hickman, confessed to strangling a one-year-old baby, saying she acted because she felt mentored or supported poorly and laughed during questioning, a nonchalant attitude noted by police and criminologists.
In Pittsburgh on July 1, members of the Zionist Organization of America entered the second day of their 31st annual convention divided into factions vying for leadership. A nominations committee was to present officer recommendations for the coming year, with two camps backing Louis Lipsky and Rabbi Stephen Wise respectively.
A baseball game will be played at West End park this evening at 5 30. The opposing team is not yet learned but a hammer is predicted as the likely outcome.
Two games are scheduled for July 4 at Klan Farm as Indiana A. A. and Arcadia compete during the picnic. Games start at 10 30 a m and 3 p m with a talk by "Strong wolf" the Indian soldier and a band concert. If weather is bad the talk and concert move to the High School auditorium.
Taxpayers must file 1928 County and Borough Tax by Tuesday July 3 to receive a five percent discount. W. P. Lowry, Collector, Municipal Building, notes the deadline and discount policy. Auto Parts Co Ritz Theatre mention appears as ad copy for vehicle parts and seafood products.
Dominick Giancole told police he found his wife Rose dead from a bullet to the temple as he left their bedroom for work. The couple had married four months earlier and Giancole said she had talked of dying together days before.
Nearest vandals out of jail return to town late Saturday night peeling bark from maple trees planted before the Second Ward school building. Chief of Police George O Connell and assistants Allen and Conners are on the case. Arrests are expected soon.
The Easex heach owned by Ralph Orr at 1823 Church Street was stolen from his garage late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The car had license 691-236 and officers are working on clues today.
Unconfirmed Paris report says Captain Roald Amundsen, missing explorer, may have been located at sea near the Norwegian coast. The French sea plane, with Guilbaud and Lt Leif Diethishsen aboard, vanished after departing Tromsoe to aid the Nobile expedition search. Bear Island lies mid between Spitsbergen and Tromsoe.
One of the best dances ever held at Dreamland Saturday evening. Over a hundred couples filled the floor as the park dance craze continued. Lisle Learn and his Trionades of Indiana provided music formerly known as the Royal Serenaders. Booking for orchestras is through Mae Williams. Dreamland plans another dance July fourth with the Trionades in the pit.
Benjamin Kanowitz, a New York fruit dealer, was killed by a bomb last evening as his motor car started. The blast wrecked a nearby bank and burned the vehicle. Kanowitz’s missing left leg was not recovered. Relatives said he had no enemies and threats. His wife later admitted he had been a bootlegger.
Jim D. Penman, accused of forgery, will be tried here today. He is charged with signing another name to an automobile contract.
Miss Olga Clark daughter of Mr and Mrs F Clark of West Wheatfield Township was successfully operated on for appendicitis at Indiana Hospital Tuesday. Her condition was reported improved today. A fire customer previously praised G and J Tires saying they offer the right price and mileage. J M Stewart and Co advertises 264 2/3% terms.
The Marathon Dance, delayed to 8 PM, gathers 25 couples who checked into local hotels. Represented towns include Indiana Homer City Blacklick Graceton Blairsville Latrobe Derry Johnstown New Kensington Arnold Irwin Pittsburgh Cambria City Jeannette Greensburg and nearby communities. A Jefferson county church service led by Rossiter faced a state police and Indian deputy presence. An injunction claimed the gathering violated distance rules near the county line. The pastors and flock attended, with the meeting continuing despite authorities, and the pulpit area secured with a padlock.
A man in Los Angeles recovered his memory and spoke to police about his identity and past. He recalled being employed by Blair Company of New York and having children in Bogota. He described a June 18, 1927 night when he was robbed and his memory blanked until Saturday when it returned.
Complication of illness claimed the life of Mrs Louise Campbel aged 61 at her home. Son in law and daughter Mrs E L Mays of 611 South Street stated she was a Buffalo native and had been ill about a month. She was a Catholic. Daughter Mrs Mays will ship the body to Buffalo for funeral services and interment on Tuesday.
The Magyar Presbyterian Church in Rossiter was barred after holding open air services twice daily since September. Four United States Senators from the investigation committee met with strikers last February, while Mrs Margaret Harkleroad the organist aided to hold open air meetings defying state police. Strikers wives, members of Pastor Phillips flock, attended the services and then dispersed, using a pomely pulp.
