Lions Plan Big Fourth in Indiana County Amid Festivities

Indiana Lions Club hosts the 14th annual Fourth of July celebration at Mack Community Center featuring auto thrill show by Jose Chitwood, bicycle giveaways funded by the Indiana Evening Gazette, and a full stock car race program on Tuesday with time trials at 12 15 p.m. and races at 2 p.m. Proceeds support the Lions Health Camp serving underprivileged and crippled children and community groups.

A Harrisburg AP report says Gov. Lawrence issued a Friday statement urging continued alertness by motorists over the four day July Fourth holiday. The message notes extended holiday travel from Friday evening to Tuesday evening and was issued in the governor's name as he traveled home from the national governors conference in Honolulu.

AP reports a Teamsters strike begun at 12 01 a m after contract expirations with Local 282 and 160 firms. About 2 000 truck drivers, including 1 200 delivering sand and gravel, will halt materials causing swift shortages at sites. Fifty Years in Indiana Gazette Stalwart Rush Ray Honored

On July 1 1911 R Hastie Ray co publisher of the Indiana Evening Gazette marked his fiftieth year in newspapers. The Gazette evolved from weekly circulation of 300 to about 18000 daily in two editions. Staff congratulated him with a signed drawing as he previously led local business groups and campaigned to attract industry to Indiana.

Boy Recovering From Sea Ordeal

A 14-year-old boy from Huntington Beach California named Terry McClelland is recovering in a San Diego hospital after three days at sea. He was rescued Friday by a fishing boat 90 miles southwest of San Diego and later transferred to a submarine arriving that night in San Diego. He described three terrible days of shipwreck thirst delirium death hunger heat and blinding glare of sun sea and sky.

County Brothers Pass Out Cigars On Same Day

Two Indiana County brothers celebrated births on the same day at Johnstown IVE Hospital. James Lichtenfels and his wife Joan welcomed a son at 10:10 a.m., their second, while Howard Lichtenfels and his wife Margaret welcomed a daughter at 2:25 p.m., their first. The newborns were born in the same hospital room, where the brothers shared cigars.
