State Police to patrol roads as rain-soaked highways raise crash risk. Governor Lawrences plea to drive with the Golden Rule echoed by officers urging extra caution. Sgt Jack W. Bert and Chief Harry Owens urged safe travel and keeping auto mishaps off the holiday agenda at local Lions Club event.
State Police report a tractor operated by Earl Byers aged 62 pulled onto Route 22 near Indiana and collided with a car driven by Helen Weaver aged 44, sending Byers to Indiana Hospital. The Weaver car then hit an oncoming vehicle driven by Prancy Johnson aged 32. Damages totaled about 1000 for the tractor, 1500 for the Weaver auto and 300 for the Johnson auto.
Two cars collided at the South Sixth Street and Empers Avenue intersection at 2 30 this afternoon according to Indiana Borough Police. Bert Cameron Homer City R D 1 northbound on Sixth St and Genevieve Aloisi Homer City R D 2 eastbound on Gompers Ave collided. Damage to Cameron vehicle estimated at 800 with 4 to Aloisi aura no injuries reported.
AP reports a two percent decline in business conditions in the Pittsburgh district for the period ending June 25. Local mills show softened demand and production slowdowns amid shifting market trends. Major steel firms in the area faced minor payroll adjustments and cautious outlooks for the next quarter.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev receives a warm welcome from about 3,000 Fiat plant workers in Vienna’s Communist district. He shakes hands, asks about conditions, and delivers a forceful speech amid security concerns. Plant officials present him a truck model as France tour note follows. The day includes traffic disruption and a pedestrian sub way incident during handshakes.

Cuban authorities under Fidel Castro seized the Esso and Shell refineries in Havana after declaring orders to protect essential fuels. The move, backed by armed workers and militiamen, followed refusals to process Soviet crude and echoed actions against Texaco two days earlier. Refinery crude stocks are critically low, with Shell about three days and Esso less.
International columnist Pearson predicted Kennedy will be the next president at Indiana State College in Fisher Auditorium before over 1,500 students and guests. He said Kennedy will be nominated and win, and warned of a possible deadlock if not chosen on the first ballot with Johnson or Stephenson running again.
In Cahone Colorado sheriff acted as arbiter in a family dispute. Everett Johnson 7 shot his daughter and son in law, wounded his son, then killed himself. Leona Vettie 39 and James Vettie 29 died. David Johnson 19 was shot in arm and shoulder but survived. Johnson owned about 900 acres north of Cahone. The Vetties had land in the soil bank program. Mrs Vettie’s father cut property and sought a share of funds.
Many stores offices and business houses will be closed Monday July 4 in celebration of Independence Day. Indiana County Courthouse offices and most banks will be closed. State Employment Service also closes and unemployment claimants must sign for checks as scheduled. The Indiana Evening Gazette will not publish Monday and resumes Tuesday with full news coverage.
In New Kensington Pennsylvania a Pittsburgh man LeRoy Perkins 29 was shot and killed during an alleged burglary at a Cut Rate Furniture Store. Officers surprised Perkins and Nathan Cunningham 32 as they loaded gear into a truck. Perkins died at New Kensington Hospital. Cunningham has been charged with burglary.
Indian police aided by 18 deputies moved at dusk and dispersed protesters with a tear gas shell. Seventeen demonstrators were arrested and later arraigned on malicious mischief and unauthorized use of tribal and federal property. The sit-in, led by the True Utes, drew opposition from mixed-blood and other-tribe members, who accused officials of misspent funds for recreation and tourism.
The House moved to override President Eisenhower's veto of a 74.4 percent pay raise for federal employees, sending the measure to the Senate where Lyndon Johnson vowed a prompt vote. Eisenhower called the raise indefensible and urged a modest increase, while GOP leaders ponder sustaining the veto during an election year.
Bedford Pa AP report states a Greyhound bus rear ended a moving truck on the Pennsylvania Turnpike three miles east of Breezewood. Driver William Gallagher of Gettysburg suffered a compound fracture. Florence Devlin of Philadelphia hospitalized for possible rib injuries. Truck driver Corbin Neff of Dover uninjured.
