37 Day Lull Ends As U S Bombers Hit North Vietnam

The United States resumes air strikes on North Viet Nam after 37 day pause. Navy and Air Force planes hit bridges ferries warehouses and highway inland from Hanoi Haiphong while ground forces press Viet Cong operations. One Navy plane was shot down and Lt Cmdr Sylvester Chumley was rescued unharmed under fire. See continuation on page 2.

New LBJ Peace Plea to UN

President Johnson announced a fresh Viet Nam peace appeal to the United Nations shortly after resuming bombing of North Vietnamese military targets following a 37 day pause. The move came as Washington ordered renewed air strikes while signaling a push for renewed diplomacy.

Two-Car Crash Near Kittanning Fatal for Countian

Tony Boris, 71, died at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital after a Route 422 collision with Norton Crose, 49. Crose and his wife Jane, 47, were hospitalized. Judy Jordan, 21, treated and released. Damages pegged at 700 and 500 dollars. Accident occurred at 2 45 p m.

Fire levels East Pike home injures resident

A flash fire swept the basement of a one story frame home at 494 East Pike yesterday afternoon. Mr and Mrs W Mial Rook escaped in deep snow with frost bitten feet while two cars, a 1966 and a 1951 model, were destroyed. Fire officials estimated about 15000 dollars in damage and noted water supply problems hampered firefighting. Mrs Rook was hospitalized in satisfactory condition.

Ambulance Campaign Extends To February 10

The Citizens Ambulance Service drive is extended to Feb 10 due to blizzard like weather. Subscriptions cost 5 dollars for a family and 3 dollars for an individual, within 15 miles of Indiana Hospital. The drive has 5,285 subscribers and late subscribers face 25 dollars per ambulance call.

Gov. Scranton postponed until next Monday the presentation to the legislature of the 1966-67 general fund budget due to a weekend storm. Legislative leaders chose a token session and state capitol closures forced the postponement of all action until next week.

The winter storm of 1965-66 halted travel across Pennsylvania isolating communities and motorists. The 360 mile Pennsylvania Turnpike closed to traffic for the fourth time in 26 years as snowdrifts and freezing winds stranded travelers along the highway.
