Ohio river flood crest clipped by bitter cold in Ohio town

The Ohio River flood crest was reduced by bitter cold as 10 000 fled homes toward Gallipolis and Portsmouth. The 7 am level at Gallipolis stood 53.7 feet, flood stage 50, with crest expected near 53.8 at 11 am EST. Portsmouth faced 58 feet, Cincinnati 59, with limited damage and about 250 rural refugees. The cold aided but hindered cleanup after the crest.

Admit China Plans Part in Armistice Affairs

In Munsan Korea on January 30 AP reports Communist negotiators reversed earlier limits, agreeing to rotate 25 000 troops monthly and Chinese involvement in demilitarization administration, while opposing covert troop concentrations and weekly unit location reports. The Allies seek 76 000 monthly and civil admin role disputes persist. A North Korean general questioned the prisoner exchange plan as a U N spokesman noted.

Peeler Announces Candidacy For Second Term

State Senator Peeler of Indiana Jefferson County district formally announced his bid for a second term in Pennsylvania's upper chamber. Ebensburg residents learn the water they drink has had sodium fluoride added for six weeks to reduce tooth decay. The chemical, in about one part per million, has been in the system since mid December. Brookville and Ford City are the only other Pennsylvania communities using the process.

Green Township home damaged by fire last night

Firefighters battled a near zero temperature blaze in Green Township damaging the Ray Patterson residence by about 300 dollars. Propane booster truck and a nearby spring aided efforts while no injuries were reported. The two story frame house is owned by Mrs. Nellie Kertler of Detroit.

Egypt May Join Middle East Defense

Cairo reports an Egyptian foreign office spokesman said Egypt would join a Middle East defense command if Britain dispute is resolved to Egypt's satisfaction. The premier Aly Maher Pasha indicated participation would be favorable if other Egyptian concerns are handled, with the National Front government to decide Egypt's stance. The premier met with Ambassadors of the Four Powers who proposed a Middle East pact to defend the Suez Canal.

Popcorn Blaze Damages $42,000 at Allentown Warehouse

A fire thought to have begun in popcorn near a heater destroyed a one story warehouse in Allentown. Damages exceed $42,000, per Sam Mittman, manager of the Berle Vending Co. Twelve families were displaced from a neighboring apartment house but could return later.

Fire breaks out in Boro Barn in Indiana borough

London January 30 Prime Minister Churchill stated Britain has no formal commitment to join the United States in punitive action against China if a Korean truce is breached.
