A marriage license was issued on Thursday to John Jurecko aged 2 and Annie Gresko aged 15, both of Starford, with the groom employed in the mines there. Reports show expanded activity at ports across the west and south and merchants expect a slow but steady return to normal trade volumes. Uncertainty over steel and iron prices dampens optimism though January’s dull season and mixed reports persist while rail and structural markets stay limited but prospects look good.
The oldest man in West Virginia and likely the nation died at his grandson’s home near Point Pleasant. He was 70 grandchildren, 121 great grandchildren, and 19 great great grandchildren. He never drank liquor or used tobacco. The report notes the man’s ties to early Ohio Valley settlement.
New York January 29. Courts will settle which ship caused the Nantucket collision involving the White Star Republic and the Italian liner Florida. Both owners filed damage suits seeking about 2.0 million dollars. Florida's owners sought limit of liability at 224000, while the Republic claims 2.1 million. Florida had a stay order suspending damages actions as the Oceanic line suit proceeds. Tortola owners argued the Republic officers caused the crash. litigation continues in admiralty court.
William Anderson or William Phillips, a burglar said to be from Dubois, Pennsylvania, was shot by a trapgun while attempting to open a cash drawer at Miller & Saylor near Meyersdale on January 1. He walked two miles after being shot and has no known relatives. Canton Ohio June 29 Rear Admiral Evans criticizes the Bureau system and argues against departments run by bureaucrats who lack expertise on battleships and fleets. He urges comprehensive reform to create a more efficient naval service as sought by the naval investigating committee.
In Washington on June 29, patriotic societies held exercises marking the birthday of William McKinley born January 29, 1843. Next Sunday evening Rev. Dr. Woodrow will deliver a memorial sermon at the First Congregational Church titled Willard McKinley the Man the Soldier the Citizen President and Christian. Many attendees will hear the sermon.
In Chattanooga Tennessee on January 29 Dave Edwards was hanged in the county jail for murder. On the scaffold Edwards spoke of the victim J. W. Davis saying he expects to meet him in eternity and that Davis had little time left for the future world.

Washington January 30 Tonight at the New Willard hotel President Roosevelt will be roasted at the Gridiron club dinner. The twenty fourth annual banquet will be his last as president with satire on the administration and Africa trip. Retiring vice president and defeated congressmen also satirized. Mrs Elia Harry of Sharpsville Pennsylvania confessed to killing her husband James Harry during a Thanksgiving quarrel. She says morphine impaired her judgment and she fired after seizing his revolver when he left the house. She was taken to Mercer to await trial.
A Memphis Tennessee bill proposes general amnesty and pardon for anyone who aided or abetted the Lincoln assassination. The measure aims to mark the 100th birthday of the slain president and to reveal facts about the case, including Booth’s capture and death at Garrett House in Virginia.
