Harrisburg official Daniel Buser reports Pennsylvania’s elaborate inaugural parade float vanished in Washington. Built for the 1973 ceremony, the $10,000 float owned by Dal Val Advertising was to be leased to the Committee of 100,000 Pennsylvanians. Marines moved it after the Jan. 20 parade, with Independence Hall and the Capitol damaged and the float reportedly taken to the Naval Gun Factory. No clear explanation yet. Buser seeks information.

NEW YORK AP A onetime Wilkes-Barre automobile dealer claims marriage to a woman less than half his age cost him a 400000 fortune and left him on Social Security. Roscoe Miller, 80, filed suit in New York Supreme Court seeking to bar his wife Penna Jean Brenner, 37, and a man she knew as Nick Mitchell from using assets he says he lost after being talked into reinvestment. He says he met his bride in Fort Lauderdale two years after retirement and married last July in Elkton Maryland.

Miner rescues 11 from smoke in Humphrey 7 mine
Millard Brock, a 38 year old crew storeman from Morgantown West Virginia, led 11 fellow miners to safety through dense smoke after a rooffall ignited a coal seam at Humphreys No 7 mine early Tuesday. 128 escaped when the fire was discovered. One trapped man hospitalized for observation. No injuries among the rest of midnight shift. The incident recalls November deaths at Mannington No 9 mine.

An Italian government commission warned Venice will be destroyed by rising tides within 20 years unless the lagoon is partly drained. The 70 member panel proposed an eight point plan. A UH1 helicopter was downed by ground fire 19 miles southwest of Da Nang injuring two crewmen. An OH6 was shot down near Saigon during an operation to encircle a Viet Cong force, with one crewman injured.
