Horace D. Matt, 61, founder and long time headmaster of Taft School, died at his home in Watertown, Connecticut. He established the school in 1890 with ten pupils and became headmaster in 1999, guiding it to prominence among American preparatory schools. He was known for his dedication to education and served as a legal adviser early in his career.
Four convicts attempted an escape from the Wisconsin State Prison at Waupun. A guard squad killed one man, wounded two, and the fourth escaped uninjured over a 22 foot wall but was later recaptured hiding under a car.
