Gov. Scranton said he will not call a special session to redraw congressional districts unless there is prior agreement between the two major parties. He criticized last year’s reapportionment mess and noted the Supreme Court already took over the task after legislative failure.
A onetime Hollywood star, Hedy Lamarr, was arrested in Los Angeles on a petty theft charge after security at a department store alleged she put goods totaling 86 into a bag and left. She was booked, released on bond, and faces a Municipal Court arraignment.
Indiana County Commissioners approved part two of the Central Indiana Urban Renewal Project and endorsed the general plan and land use. They also passed a resolution authorizing the Redevelopment Authority to apply for a 64058 dollar grant for the West Blairsville Urban Renewal Project.
Pvt. Aldo Rossi Jr formerly of Purchase Line High School and the Presidential Honor Guard was killed in Vietnam when he stepped on a land mine. He had been in Vietnam about a month. Survivors include his mother Mrs Lois J Long Osborne of North Pekin Illinois and his father Aldo Rossi Sr Alverda. Funeral and burial planned in North Pekin Illinois.
Army Spec. 4 Daniel G. Mechling of Kittanning R D 5 is named among 12 known dead in a transport plane crash in Vietnam. Thirty four others aboard are listed as missing. Mechling, due to discharge in April, graduated from Kittanning High School in 1960 and was drafted in 1964. He served as an infantryman with the Seventh Cavalry Division.
Mrs. Sarah E. Malcolm, 86, of 332 North Seventh Street, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at home. Native of Indiana County, she was widow of Walter Y. Malcolm. Survived by Attorney W. Thomas Malcolm, district attorney of Indiana County. Full obituary in today's Indiana Evening Gazette.
Frigid weather tightens its grip across the county with a record low of seven degrees below zero on Penn View Mountain. Blairsville and Indiana report below zero readings as crews clear windblown snow and warn of icy roads and possible two inch snowfall Friday.
