Pennsylvania orders closing eight state hospitals
Harrisburg January 31 Eight state mental hospitals and three institutions for the feeble minded were ordered closed to new patients to curb overcrowding. Welfare Secretary John D. Pennington told Governor Earle that accepting more patients would strain facilities. The state hospitals now house about 2,000 more patients than normal and the three institutions for the feeble minded have a waiting list of 3,300, with 400 beyond comfortable capacity. Names of sites include Aden town Danville Fairview Harrisburg Torrance Warren Wernersville Laurelton Pennhurst Polk and the Selins Grove epileptic colony pending capacity. Estimated total building needs across all institutions run to over 18 million dollars for urgent, most urgent, and needed structures.

City state cops on duty to relieve flood patrols
Harrisburg sent 100 picked city and state policemen by rail and air to Louisville to relieve wearied officers patrolling flood areas. Governor Earle and Major Lynn G Adams ordered the deployment with about a score of troopers aboard a six car Pennsylvania train. The train, leaving Harrisburg at 7 25, will pick up more troopers at Greensburg and Pittsburgh, with arrival in Pittsburgh not before 2 p.m. The Harrisburg police kept eight men on standby for Louisville if needed.
