Pittsburgh January 26 The soft coal industry renewed its offer to John L. Lewis to negotiate a new contract. The Operators Negotiating Committee said the deal would preserve the 1982 term and ban wage increases and strikes while maintaining 20 cents per ton royalties. About 88,000 mines across six states are idle as workers demand a five day week and better terms. Lewis had ordered a three day week to push for concessions.

Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company pits and Westmoreland Mining Company operations were shut, over 4000 miners idle. Clearfield Coal Corporation mines operated despite the protests. Clymer mine visited but first shift already began, second shift not interrupted. Both Thursday routines disrupted as the day closed.
