Whites Accuse Scottsboro Case Clash in Alabama

Sheriff Sandlin said white attackers planned the skirmish as two Scottsboro defendants were moved from Decatur toward Birmingham. Powell and Blalock were wounded, guards and National Guardsmen guarded the hospital, and a retrial delay followed. Knight defended officers’ conduct amid accusations by the Scottsboro Defense Committee and ILD leaders.

Legion Amateurs Here Tonight at Indiana High School

Ten acts perform in a variety show tonight at the Indiana High School with acts from a ventriloquist to a blindfolded harmonica performer. Featured are Jonnie Valenti playing faw tire pumps and other instruments, Ray Janis impersonating stars, Jack Morrison a flexible dancer, Edgar Vernon the Ventriloquist, Willie Dee with rapid hand work, Bebe-Freed with singing harmonica, Billie Cragin on violin, Dick Vernon and Ann Carroll blues singers, Eve O’Brien on piano, and more. The event, presented by Post No. 141, runs at 7:30 and 9:00 PM, promising a full night of entertainment and fundraising for the Legion.

Returns On Tuberculosis Seals Boosted by Local Society

Indiana County Tuberculosis Society reports many people are paying for Christmas seals at Room 24 Smith Ridge 713 Philadelphia Street. President Beryl L. State officials push for WPA airfield expansion with 40 airports planned to mark routes and employ 30,000 to 35,000. About 100,009 weekly pays to 5,000 workers on seven projects. 39 more airports to begin within two months led by Philadelphia project expected to employ 10,695 within three weeks. WPA considers six state owned and five federal airfields for work

Six state owned landing fields and five Federal fields are under consideration for WPA projects to employ about 1,400 men in two months. The WPA allocated 677,280 dollars for the work with sponsors contributing 40,500 dollars. Fields include Blain Ebensburg Mt Pocono Siddling Hill St Thomas Towanda Belle fonte Brookville Beaver Falls Everet Mercer. Plans for ten state fields at Centerville and Williamsburg were abandoned after WPA engineers found sites inadequate. Fire destroys three Avella buildings in cold water setbacks

A brisk basement fire near a coal bin in Avella caused $50 000 to $75 000 in damage to three buildings. Morris Ross owned a clothing store and Ress owned a grocery and meat market. Publishers Talk of Taxes And Social Security

Harrisburg January session of the Pennsylvania publishers annual convention focused on tax policy social security unemployment compensation payroll forms and related legislation. Farm Show Ends After Record Exhibits and Turnout

The 20th annual Farm Show drew 240,000 amid snowstorms. 10,300+ exhibits and a peak in exhibitors set records. 4-H champion cattle sold for 82 cents a pound. grand lamb sold for 35 cents. Lloyd, Friend of Lincoln, Historian, Dies at 80

Col Thomas W Lloyd a noted Williamsport newspaper man and longtime Lycoming Historical Society secretary died at 80. A Pennsylvanian historian, he lectured on Civil War President Abraham Lincoln and authored a county history. He survived by two brothers a son Curt and other relatives.
