New York, Jan. 25. Coast guard crews saved two government harbor boats after the Hugh Ward broke loose from moorings and pounded the Raritan for six hours before towing it to a pier. A Jersey Central steamer threatened hundreds aboard two ferries and sank near the Thirty-ninth Street slip. Several vessels were believed sunk in a seventy mile gale that raged over the harbor and Atlantic before daybreak. At 8 A.M. the gale eased to forty eight miles with wreckage littering the lower bay.
