Washington, Jan. 25. Forty thousand rural letter carriers will receive higher pay starting July 1 under an amendment in the postoffice appropriation bill. Carriers on routes of twenty-five miles or more gain $100 yearly to $1,000. shorter routes receive proportional increases. The bill, authorizing about $255,000,000 for the next fiscal year, also includes a provision on steel cars for future mail transport. Senate debate covers election of senators and tariff matters, with House Ways and Means reporting a tariff investigation bureau bill. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy advertised as valuable for throat and lung trouble.
Business closing sale offers include S W Kelly selling half interest in Point Store and Meat Market or entire Meat Market before March first. Additional notices advertise two automobiles in good condition with top windshield and speedometer from Indiana Sadator Company in Indians Pa. Also offered are fourteen shares of Indiana Provision Co owned by Valentine Kerr in West Water.
New York January fifth report details more evidence of enmity from violinist Fitzhugh Coyle Goldsborough toward novelist David Gradian Phillips. A diary, read at the district attorney, notes hostile entries calling Phillips an enemy to society, with alleged displeasure at Phillips writings including depictions of Goldsborough's family and remarks about wealthy women smoking and drinking.
Phillip Steiner and his wife attempted to move furniture to a new home to avoid a landlord dispute. At dawn they crossed a railroad trestle. the trestle was slippery and Steiner slipped, dragging his wife who fell with him. Steiner was killed and his wife sustained a broken back.
West Union reports rumors of war over Judge Blair election probe. Special grand jury resumes after ten days, adds about fifty indictments, nearing two thousand total. Blair meets several who plead guilty. judge accommodates them. Death Ends Suffering in Lebanon reports coroner findings after elderly woman’s death from grief. Albany notices a list of names and ages, and Kansas City reports Ketchel murder conviction progress.
Father Roche, former secretary of the Catholic Church extension society, after an audience with the pope and a lengthy talk with Cardinal Merry del Val, says Archbishop Farley of New York will likely be named a cardinal. The donor is expected to be decided in the near future.
W E Chilton wins in West Virginia Senate bid after 62 votes in both houses, securing the full term. Watson falls short for the short term with 57 votes in the Legislature. Hubbard and followers bolt, alleging bribery. Davis and Watson tally later show Davis with 10, Edington 1, aiding the split vote.
Harrisburg January 25 The legislature adopts a new school code replacing the state board of education with governorappointed members, terms from one to six years, and ex-officio superintendent. Counties to elect a county superintendent with state salary and district classifications driving governance. Medical inspectors to oversee pupil health. first slate of directors chosen in 1913 with staggered terms.
