French Demand Tunis Peace Amid Riots Toll Rises

In Tunis, Jan 24 AP French Resident General Jean De Hauteclocque sternly warned Bey Sidi Mohamed Al Amin to restore order as 10 days of rioting killed at least 50. Reinforcements moved into trouble spots across Tunisia while Arab nationalists press for independence. The Bey had shown sympathy to nationalists and earlier refused to meet the Resident General. A French funeral for Col. Norbert Durand was cancelled as tension rose.

Government Cleanup Man Questioned

The House Judiciary Committee met in closed session to consider an inquiry into Attorney General McGrath amid alleged favoritism and influence in the Justice Department. Rep Keating introduced a resolution calling for a full investigation of McGrath's administration since August 1949. The move follows Truman's selection of McGrath to direct government corruption efforts and comes as the committee, largely Democratic, prepares for a potentially partisan vote with 17 Democrats and 13 Republicans.

Snow slows traffic as Indiana County gets two inches

A two inch snowfall slowed traffic across Indiana County but roads stayed clear with no major accidents by early afternoon. Armagh saw heavier snow as crews spread cinders on main arteries and rural roads remained passable. one minor crash in Indiana Borough caused fifty dollars in damage. State police denied rumors of rampant narcotics use among Punxsutawney school students. Lt. Frank C. Garnow said an intensive investigation found no trace of dope in the area and warned rumors harm investigations and reputations. He urged reporting verified information to police.

Indiana County motorists were warned they have one week to renew 1952 drivers licenses and have cars inspected for the first half of the year. Frank Graff of Armstrong County announced his candidacy for Republican congressional delegate from the 29th district to the GOP convention.
