Two men convicted of attempted robbery were brought from Eastern Penitentiary under heavy guard to face a murder charge in the holdup slaying of Thomas J. Burnley at his hardware store last December 15. Detective Curran testified they had a 32 caliber pistol stolen from Burnby’s store and a 88 caliber pistol. ballistic tests showed which killed Burnby. Both confessed Brooks shot Burnby when he resisted the holdup. they are held without bail on homicide charges and each serves three to six years for the earlier attempted robbery of Frank Ghekman, clerical lesson owner, two hours after Burnby was killed.
In New Orleans on January 23, 34 year old socialite De Lesseps S Morrison defeated longtime regular Democratic leaders in a surprise primary victory. Unofficial returns show Morrison 67824 votes to 63343 for Robert B Maestri with Shirley G Wimberly at 4028. Morrison ran as an independent candidate after leaving his Army colonel's uniform.
A Cambria County war veteran Clyde Eckenrode died from gas fumes in a parked car after exposure. The other victim, 19, from Cresson, Pe, died yesterday in Mercy Hospital. Blair County Coroner Daniel M. Replogle reported both men appeared unconscious and may have been overcome by the monoxide while sitting together.

A 43 year old man formerly from Malinta Ohio and later Ellwood City Pennsylvania was questioned by Toledo Police Captain Ralph Murphy and Henry County Sheriff Red Bartels about the October slaying of Jean Fatur of Ellwood City. The body was found in the Maumee River near Napoleon. The suspect, arrested in a Toledo rooming house, underwent a polygraph test whose results were not released. Witnesses in Ellwood City said they saw Miss Fatur enter the suspect’s car days before the slaying. the man denies taking her to Toledo. She was strangled and her skull fractured. identification was by dental charts.
In Ciudad Victoria Tamaulipas police fired on a crowd after demonstrations sacked the police station and burned records killing one man and wounding two. The violence followed a protest against a newly installed PRM mayor, mirroring earlier clashes in Leon where troops killed thirty and wounded hundreds. A separate protest at Ciudad Mante occurred without bloodshed.

Anderson hailed farm progress and announced 1946 production goals calling for 358,000,000 acres of cultivated field and hay crops, 10,000,000 above 1945. He spoke at a dinner honoring George Washington Carver and urged a national program to stabilize and improve consumption of farm products and strengthen the overall economy. Senator Joseph F. Guffey urged advancing agricultural science and expanding electricity and machinery use on farms to lift farmer earnings.

SAN BERNARDINO Calif Jan 23 Deputy Sheriff Arthur L Eggers of Temple City 62-year-old son of a former San Francisco sheriff was booked for murder inquiry after hours of grilling about the mutilation slaying of a woman whose headless and handless body was found in a mountain canyon near her home The body was tentatively identified as Mrs Dorothy Eggers 42 reported missing by her husband on Jan 2 Eggers denied guilt saying he would not hurt a hair on her head The couple had two adopted children aged 19 and Lorraine Jr The investigation involved identifying a blanket from Eggers home and stains in his bungalow and car as human blood Eggers previously owned a .380 pistol now sold and the victim was shot with a .380 Auto Eggers admitted quarrel over finances and misidentified the body, but investigators say he had never seen it
