Today eight hearings began at 9 o clock with D M Brown seeking re licensing of the Clawson House Indiana presented by James Mack. Brown testified about bar room fights and foreign funeral party appearances but denied disorder. The more notable session concerned W A Swift re licensing the New Commercial Hotel Creekside with 16 remonstrants witnesses. 12 allowed to testify. Witnesses including Clarence Spence and Austin Groft testified about drinking at the hotels and ages misrepresented at the bar.
Pennsylvania's entire compensation board will meet at Johnstown City Hall on February 8 for an all day session. Chairman Harry A. Mackey and associates James W. Leech and John A. Scott will hear eight compensation claims, with Swanson vs Sharkey of Windber listed for rehearing due to transcript issues. The windover case may touch on Francis Walter Sword’s death from burns at Cambria mills. settlement chances are noted.
The Indiana Rifle Club calls a meeting for Thursday evening January 26 at 8 o'clock in the Court House. Officers will be elected, members are urged to attend, bring last year's scores for reporting to headquarters, and consider joining the club. Initiation is $1 and annual dues $2. Ammunition and guns are supplied under National rules.
Deputy sheriffs uncovered 22 infant corpses and a woman and a 2 year old skeleton in boxes and preserved solution behind A L Ballard's Pittsburgh undertaking establishment during a sheriff sale inspection. Coroner Jamison and Deputy Coroner Ambos investigated. health department deputized Steinecke to probe. Ballard produced death certificates for all bodies. no charges yet. DA notified. Beinhauer assists.
Franz Bopp German consul general in the United States is sentenced to two years at McNeil's Island and one year in county jail plus a $10,000 fine for violating American neutrality. Three aides and Crowley receive similar terms. Mrs. Crowley less fines. A separate report notes a fire at the Armory and Administration building destroying Bopp and four others.
MT PLEASANT January 23 Officials, using information from a local youth named Queer, say they have identified the alleged fire bug. Joseph Sillman aged 18 is in custody on an old larceny charge as investigators pursue the four fire buildings set ablaze with Sillman said to have served as lookout.
Sherman L. Whipple and 11 congressmen began a probe into President Wilsons peace note leaks and possible profits on December 19 20 and 21 on the New York Stock Exchange and Customs House with H G S Noble as first witness. The inquiry aims to identify who profited and whether a pre concerted scheme existed while excluding innocent parties.
Harrisburg report notes both House and Senate opened with numerous bill introductions. A joint noon session canvassed votes for Auditor General and State Treasurer. Senate expected to adjourn for a week.
Six men were injured today when a scaffold on the south side of the William Edwards building collapsed, hurling workers about 50 feet to the ground. The incident caused at least one fatality and prompted investigations into the scaffold’s safety and construction practices.
Mr. and Mrs. John Isenberg of Freeport mark sixty years of marriage on Wednesday January 24. Mrs. Isenberg is the elder daughter of the late Alexander Kinghorn of White township and sister to D W Simpson and A Kingdom of Indiana. The couple lived in Indiana after marrying, later moved to a White township farm, then to Freeport about 350 years ago. Mr. Isenberg was a Pennsylvanian Railroad Company construction train conductor until retirement. They have two children, a son and a daughter married to Roy Claypool of Pittsburgh. Both enjoy good health. Guests at the golden anniversary include Mrs. and Mr. D W Simpson, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Simpson, and Mr. and Mrs. R N Ray of Indiana.
