Autopsy planned in Moscow for American prisoner Mott death

The U S embassy said Newcomb Mott 27 of Sheffield Massachusetts will have an autopsy in Moscow Monday after Soviet claims he killed himself on a prison train. The U S demanded full inquiry and consular officers may question guards as the body is brought to Moscow for the postmortem under Soviet law and U S supervision.

Nigerian Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa Found Dead

The Nigerian Information Ministry announced Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa has been found dead in Lagos. Balewa, 54, who became Nigeria's first prime minister in 1957, had been kidnapped during a coup a week earlier and had been missing since. He was known for compromise and administrative skill amid regional pressures in Africa's most populous nation.

Station Wagon Crushed In Major Elbow Crash Injuries Reported

A tractor-trailer crashed into an oncoming station wagon on Devil's Elbow injuring two University of Pittsburgh students. Marci McNutt 21 Ford City and Carlos Diamanti 27 Pittsburgh were trapped for about an hour. McNutt and Diamanti listed in serious condition at Indiana Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital. The truck driver James Strother 26 Detroit is in fair condition.

Three Killed In Tamaqua Area Car Crash

State police report a pre dawn crash on Route 209 near Tamaqua killed three people. Drivers Paul J. Garsheil 27 Hazelton and Joseph Arner 29 Coaldale died, as did passenger Lynn Pascoe 29 Coaldale. All died at Coaldale State General Hospital. Details unavailable.

Harvey A. Orr 79 Indiana County Commissioner Dies

Harvey A. Orr, 79, longtime Indiana County and borough official, died at his Indiana home. Born May 1, 1886, he served 1952 to 1959 as county commissioner and held multiple local posts including street commissioner. Survived by three sons, two daughters, one sister, nine grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Services Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Robinson-Lytle’s with interment in Oakland Cemetery.

Bomb Kills U S Sergeant as Viet Truce Halts

A 25 pound bomb planted against a U S Signal Corps billet in Saigon killed a sergeant and wounded a Vietnamese woman as the Viet Cong truce neared its midpoint. Two soldiers and several civilians were injured. About 40 men slept in the billet near Tan Son Nhut airport. The attack prompted debate over whether it violated the truce.

Saltsburg Man Wins Settlement

Saltsburg resident James E. Higgins aged 45 reached an out-of-court settlement of 79411 with the Monongahela Connecting Railroad for injuries from February 7 1963. Higgins alleged negligence in unsafe work conditions while cleaning snow from a switch at the J and L Steel Co plant in Pittsburgh resulting in back and leg injuries.

A five hour blaze in the Bangkok waterfront area destroyed about 1000 slum huts, leaving roughly 10,000 people homeless. Fire crews contained the flames but many residents lost homes and belongings.

Butler Co Youth Held In Slayings Charged After Funeral

In Butler, Pennsylvania, 15 year old Jerry Lee Sanderson attended his parents funeral two hours before being charged with murdering them and arson at their home. He remained silent at arraignment, confirming name and address.

Snow Warning For District

The Weather Bureau in Pittsburgh issued a heavy snow bulletin predicting two to five inches in and west of Pittsburgh and five to ten inches in the mountains to the east and south over the next 24 hours. Snow moves northeast from Ohio and West Virginia and will begin in Western Pennsylvania this afternoon, continuing tonight and tapering to flurries Sunday.

Mine mechanic graduates feted at rustic lodge

65 of 68 graduates already have jobs with two in interview and one joining the Army. The 68 are part of 80 who completed a 46 week MDTA program by Penn State and the Bureau of Employment Security at Elders Ridge. Course run with PSU and state agencies. 12 dropped out for work, drafting, or rules. a second MDTA class for 60 starts March 7 at the same site.
