A Rutgers study of 1,962 teens in Michigan finds that youth learn to drink rather than invent drinking. liquor use is tied to perceived maturity. About 23 percent of junior and senior high students drank occasionally, with boys preferring beer or whisky and girls wine or mixed drinks.
In New York City the activist Galamison faces arrest as he leads a plan to boycott city schools. He is charged with violating compulsory attendance laws after urging students to stay away from class. A mass walkout previously kept hundreds of thousands from classes.
