In Madrid, Spanish women break old rules as chaperones fade and young couples marry by consent or hand petitions. Public life opens for women, influenced by American freedoms and Hollywood styles, with senoritas adopting Western makeup and dress.
Bloody rioting rocked Seoul as Korean demonstrators clashed with police at the Governor General's palace complex. Two Koreans were killed and many injured as more than 200 protesters, linked to the Korean Students League, faced police after dawn gunfire. 119 Koreans were arrested as Americans remained unmolested.
General MacArthur announced an international tribunal to try Hideki Tojo and his Pearl Harbor regime on crimes against peace and humanity. The charter outlines procedures, majority verdicts, and potential death sentences with Tokyo as the first trial site.
Harrisburg reports the state health program has conducted medical exams for 125,708 pupils and dental exams for 101,763 at a total cost of 273,233 since its fall launch. Secretary Dr. Harry W. Weest said operations are advancing faster than expected with strong local cooperation.

Two died and twenty two were injured when a Mississippi bound troop train derailed five miles west of Myerstown and collided with an eastbound Reading freight. Soldiers from the 29th Infantry Division returning from Europe were aboard, with the dead identified as Charles W. Hellings, 32, Reading fireman, and a second soldier whose name was withheld.
ANSFORD Pa Jan Py Battle for jobs picketing of anthracite mines by war veterans extended to another county as 21 ex GI s and other jobless men marched before the Mahaney Coal Mining Company pit at Centralia. The mine s 125 employes refused to cross picket lines and went home. About 7 000 miners in the Panther Valley of Carbon County surrounding Lansford were idle for the third straight day as ex GI leaders planned talks with mine leaders. Polonka Nesquehoning chairman of the Veterans Steering Committee said he would ask Peter Plyark district mine workers head to arrange a meeting. Evan Evans vice president of the Light Navigation Coal Co protested reduced production blaming 30 000 tons daily loss. The Mahaney Company Columbia County produces 60 0 tons daily. Evans urged conference with the veterans. Polonka called for outsiders who worked during the war to be dismissed so local ex GI s could work. Evans said all miners who entered service and returned were reemployed.
Seventy farmers from western Pennsylvania counties attended a meeting in Clarion where Joe S. Taylor Penn State Dairy Extension specialist spoke. Taylor shared valuable information to be mimeographed and mailed to members, noting the artificial breeding program began in New Jersey in 1987 and in New York in 1939 with Pennsylvania developing since 1942 to improve herd quality.
Alderman H Frank Berkstresser reports George Way of Blair County filed assault and battery charges against Carl E Whipple principal of Keith Junior High School alleging beat his son George Way 12. Way also charged aggravated assault and battery and cruelty to a minor. Whipple posted 500 bond for a hearing date to be set after the county term. Way said his son received hospital treatment for several days and the beating was for missing classes.
In Chicago on January 19 the meat strike entered its fourth day as 263000 CIO and AFL workers walk out. Government conciliations continued with no quick settlement, stockpiles dwindling and prices rising. A federal fact finding hearing opens Tuesday as packers offer up to 10 cents an hour while demand outpaces supply across markets.
The Pennsylvania Superior Court upheld the involuntary manslaughter conviction of Police Chief William C. Duerr of Stowe Township Allegheny County for shooting and killing an escaping suspect. The court ruled self defense limits apply only when the felon is known, not an innocent party. Duerr had been sentenced to two years by the lower court after acquittal on second degree murder.
Philadelphia January 12 a statewide probe of liquor licensees is being conducted by the Federal Alcohol Tax Unit of the Department of Internal Revenue. Edward A. Dougherty says the aim is to verify honest tax reports with many violations found and tax liens or settlements typical. no criminal prosecutions yet. The sweep covers clubs laprooms restaurants and hotel bars.
In Butler on January 19 AP reports a two year jail term for Joseph N. Mechling in the fatal shooting of 14 year old David Shearer was suspended. He may not hunt or trap for ten years and is placed on two years probation. A court order requiring Mechling to pay 500 to Shearer’s family remains unchanged. Shearer died in a groundhog hunting accident on August 1.
A Camp Atterbury discharge list names Indiana Pa area servicemen and women, including T-4 John L. Prodi Avonmore and T-Sgt James E. Wilson Mentele, with numerous others from Indiana County towns such as Clymer Penn Run Homer City Robinson and surrounding communities. The record notes ranks from private to sergeant and includes addresses in Indiana, Clarksburg, and Rochester Mills, plus entries from Indiantown Gap and Port Knox Kentucky.
State College Pennsylvania ap news reports a proposal to use 14 State Teachers Colleges visual facilities to aid Penn State with overflow of admissions, mainly veterans. A committee will set procedures, chaired by Dr Francis B Haas and joined by Penn State President Ralph Hetzel. Penn State can admit 600 from about 3,000 March applicants.
The testimony pressed whether blame rests with the fleet commander for Pearl Harbor losses. He stated I cannot escape responsibility yet I did not accept responsibility, citing it lies with the Commander in Chief. Chairman Barkley said the committee will continue Monday with Krimmel.

UNIONTOWN Jan. 1 AP A State Highway worker and a 20 year old housewife were shot dead in her apartment by Clarence Murphy 32 who then killed himself after telling his victim he would. Murphy shot Mrs Martha Hall twice and then turned the gun on himself leaving two young daughters aged 4 and 2 unharmed. Mrs Nora Hoff 35 was visiting when the tragedy occurred. Hall and Hoff said Murphy entered angry handed Mrs Hall a key and opened fire. Hall wife of serviceman James Hall is estranged from him since his return from two years in Europe. Officers reported both victims died at the scene.
George L. Glenn of Punxsutawney died Thursday at Adrian Hospital at 2 31 PM from uremic poisoning. Born November 20 1861 in Armstrong County he worked as a safeman near Dayton and taught in Smiecksburg Hamilton and Frostburg later becoming Punxsutawney West End principal. He formed the Lowry and Glenn Insurance Agency in 1894 and built a career in insurance and local clubs. Funeral services were held at 2 30 PM with interment in Circle Hill Cemetery.
