Kenneth W. Laird 30 was thrown from a car driven by Anthony DeMaio 41 when the vehicle struck a pole at Johnson and Morewood avenues about 8 p m. Laird died of a broken neck and fractured skull. DeMaio was jailed then released on $2000 bond pending an inquest. Witnesses disputed another car’s involvement as the crash was attributed to loss of control near the curb. Laird’s parents and brother survive. Laird was a former U S Navy seaman and member of Company L.
