Pittsburgh officials announced plans to ask Governor Edward Martin in Harrisburg to cut the city county share of the Penn Lincoln Parkway from six million dollars of the thirty one million dollar project. Mayor David Lawrence warned that immediate charges could strain bonded reserves estimated between three and three point five million. A decision to appeal the six million figure was made at a city county meeting. The delegation will include Mayor Lawrence county commissioner chairman John J Kane and their legal and engineering staffs.

In Washington in January 1744 two Pennsylvania Democrats Green and McGlinchey announced Army liberalizing discharge rules to include financial hardship. They quoted Gen Eisenhower saying no blanket plan for fathers, but orders are going out to consider financial hardship as a discharge basis beyond sickness or death.
LANSFORD Pa Jan 17 AP leaders of job hunting veterans whose picketing halted Panther Valley coal production planned talks with mine owners. Evan Evans VP Lehigh Navigation Coal Co welcomed a negotiating committee and a meeting to discuss grievances. about 30 000 tons of coal a day were lost as 7 000 miners did not cross picket lines.
Federal Judge Albert L. Watson sentenced John Robert Payne Williamsport to 10 years in prison after he pled guilty to postal violations and attempted jail break. The government charged him with stealing checks from the mails and forging endorsements and attempting to escape Lycoming County jail. J. F. P. Sheffer of Williamsport also pleaded guilty to a postal violation and was placed on probation for one year.
Harrisburg January 17 U S District Judge Albert L Watson fined H Warshaw and Sons Inc which runs two mills in Lycoming County 250 for violating child labor laws by employing 12 children under 16 J A Pulkrod general superintendent and Harry R Fegley assistant superintendent were fined 375 each on similar charges in a no contest disposition yesterday
DePaul star George Mikan nets 51 points in two games to top the national college scoring race with 288 points, overtaking Marshall’s Bill Hall who drops to second at 281. Hall’s 38-point week isn’t enough to regain the lead as Mikan maintains a 22.15 point per game average through 13 outings.

Yenan claims Chiang Kai-Shek ordered forces to seize communist strong points before cease fire. 5,000 communists seize Yingkow. 40,000 attack Taian and rail points on the Tientsin- Pukou line. Foreign press protests Chinese authorities limiting news access.
GREENSBURG Jan 17 UP More divorces were granted in Westmoreland county last year than ever before, court records disclosed yesterday. The records show 434 divorce decrees handed down by the court during 1945, compared to 341 in 1944, with 12 granted during the holiday period from Dec 23 to year end. Desertion and non support cases also increased last year, with 129 on the records, compared to 96 in 1944.
A Portland woman reported a man politely offered to hold her heavy shopping bag while she waited for a bus and then ran off with it. Inside the bag was a dead dog bound for a relative's farm for burial. The incident occurred January 17.
An unemployed laborer in Salt Lake City applied directly to President Truman for a job. The request moved through White House, Department of Labor, Western Regional USES, Utah USES, and Salt Lake City USES, then to a local bureau five blocks from the applicant’s home.
Washington reports a series of federal dairy hearings may lead to higher fluid milk prices, with increases of five tents per quart in spring and summer and three cents in winter. Sessions begin in New York, then Boston and other major cities as the Agriculture Department ends subsidy programs. Dairy farmers seek price rises to offset subsidy termination, with New York suppliers proposing higher consumer prices from 3.70 to 4.66 per hundred pounds seasonally, equating to two to three cents per quart.
President Truman urged CIO and United Steelworkers leaders Fairless and Murray to seal a wage pact amid looming steel and auto strikes. Conferees reported no progress while Fairless rebuffed a 19 1/2 cent raise and Murray held firm against any increase. Assistant County Agent William Cochran presented two reels of local motion pictures and the next meeting is planned for February 20 at Robert Fulton home in West Lebanon.
Eleven year old James Campbell died at home in Carapolis after a brain injury believed to stem from a mishap during a cops and robbers game at Thorn Run School Moon Township. Dr H B Speer said the brain injury caused the death and the mother noted only a slight headache with no visible external marks.
Washington January 17 AP Senator Morse CPA said the steel strike threat should end soon and that as steel goes so goes the nation regarding major labor disputes. He expects the deadlock to break with settlement near. He warned industrial strife affects broader economic stability.

Housewives report loss and seek replacement stamps in suspected schemes. applications reach 10 000 weekly. Replacement requests from returning servicemen flow in, but bids must wait for investigations into lost or stolen coupons.
Churchill urges that American troops stay in Europe to prevent undoing wartime gains. He supports partition of Germany as currently enforced by occupation lines and comments on American labor troubles. He warns postwar Europe needs sufficient Allied presence to maintain victory.
Harrisburg January 17 Governor Martin expressed full support for the Liquor Control Board saying he would sue if necessary. He addressed reports the board ignored his instructions by suspending rather than revoking licenses for violators. He noted cases involving intoxicated sales had been acted on prior to his enforcement orders and said he delegates tasks to the board without micromanaging.
In Fayette County Grindstone a fire swept a coal miner's residence killing three children. John Brown Jr aged 5 and his sisters Patricia 3 Joyce 2 perished. Neighbors rushed to rescue and the victims were pronounced dead at Brownsville General Hospital. The parents were away visiting neighbors when the fire started in the kitchen where a coal stove burned.
FRANKFURT Germany January 17 Gen Joseph T McNarney announced that mass demonstrations by American soldiers in the European theater require express authorization by military commanders. He said such mass meetings, once allowed, served their purpose but must now end to prevent confusion about predeployment problems. Instructions were issued to all major officers.
Two obituaries note the deaths of Anna Yasko of Clymer and Catherine Palmer Carter of White township. Anna Yasko, aged in her 80s, widow of George Yasko, leaves many children and siblings. services set at St. Anthony Church with burial at St. Bernard cemetery. Catherine Palmer Carter, 92, daughter of Daniel and Amanda Palmer, survived by a brother and nieces, funeral at Bell Funeral Home with Interment Greenwood Cemetery.
Harrisburg reports Governor Martin said the Army’s Deshon General Hospital at Butler could be returned to the state by June 1 as a mental hospital. He estimated it could provide about 2,600 beds, noting it was built as a tuberculosis sanitarium which the state does not need.
Harrisburg Jan 17 The governor said he was always glad to service state workers but declined further comment on pay increase petitions from 42 000 state employees. A CIO committee of 14 presented proposals to raise pay by 20 a month for all workers.
