Snowplows carved paths through Donner Pass as 222 travelers on the City of San Francisco faced a fourth day in the freezing train car. Rescue hopes rested on a five mile exit cleaned by highway plows while a relief train and a doctor aided 60 sick with fumes.
The United Nations Command charged that Communists in Korea violated every provision of the Geneva Convention protecting POW camps. The claim followed a report that U N planes bombed a POW camp at Kangdong Monday night. Negotiations at Panmunjom remained deadlocked over prisoner exchange and handling Red airfields.
President Truman urged Congress to raise about five billion dollars in 1952 revenue by boosting rates and closing loopholes while deferring pay-as-you-go mobilization. He outlined goals of 5 percent higher output and 1.3 million more workers, and proposed extending the Defense Production Act, enhancing farm price supports, tightening credit controls, and enacting a dozen laws to meet an armament buildup and deficits.
A baby girl was born to Mrs. Sally Ray Naylon at McGee Hospital in Pittsburgh at 4 30 yesterday afternoon. She weighs seven pounds four ounces and has red hair. The mother is Sally Ray Naylon, former Sally Ray of Indiana. Sgt J David Naylon of the 112th Infantry 28th Division stationed in Germany is the father.
Bread prices rise one cent in Indiana and the Pittsburgh district to 18 1/2 cents per loaf effective tomorrow. A bakery spokesman says OPS approved the hike earlier but Pittsburgh bakers delayed agreement until now.
Donald E Smith of Glen Campbell was elected chairman of the Banks Township Road Supervisors. Lynn Shields of the same address was named non-member secretary-treasurer. Other members are Q. B. Bair, Rossiter RD, and Lott R. Neil of Glen Campbell RD. The nine-mill tax levy for the new year remained unchanged.
PARIS Jan 16 The United States announced it will present important new proposals to the United Nations Disarmament Commission when it begins work. Ambassador Ernest A Gross urged the UN Political Committee to seek Russian atomic proposals for the commission. The proposals will appear in the first of a series of papers on atomic control and conventional arms. The commission must start before Feb 10, likely in New York. Gross pressed Soviet Foreign Minister Vishinsky to keep hands off Korean armistice talks and noted a possible link between Soviet pauses and talks progress. He warned the Political Committee that the plan should be thoroughly studied by the Disarmament Commission.
Indiana Borough residents will receive civil defense literature starting Saturday as Boy Scout troops deliver pamphlets and cards from the state. Families are urged to read and post the cards. Distribution is supervised by civil defense director Domeni Violi, with county director Paul Woodring coordinating.
Three people injured in a Monday Elderton collision at Route 210 and Main Street. George Shomo 59 Hills, Pearl Hershberger 41 Shelocta RD 1, and Ruth Cosgrove 23 Shelocta suffered injuries. Shomo possibly arm fracture, Hershberger rib fractures, Cosgrove lacerations and bruises. Vehicles damaged about 600 for Shomo and 800 for Earl McCullough's car.
Bishop Hugh L. Lamb was installed as head of the new Greensburg Diocese serving 170,000 Western Pennsylvania Catholics. In a public address he outlined plans to build offices, fund Catholic schools, Hospitals, and homes for the aged and needy, seeking priestly and lay cooperation and loyal support.
The Indiana County Bar Association has named Attorney L. Miller of Indiana its chancellor for the next year. Miller succeeds the late Attorney James W. Mark, also of Indiana, who died last year. Other officers are James L. Jack vice chancellor Thomas Barbor secretary and William E. Pierce treasurer Barbor succeeds Attorney J. Marie of Homer City.
In Iselin a two family fire killed Everett Cameron 29 and infant Thomas as his wife Larue dropped two children from a second story window and fled. The older children Leroy and Kirk Lee, ages five and six, survived the fall in their night clothes. Firefighters faced water shortages during the blaze that destroyed the duplex and threatened neighboring homes.
Harrisburg January 16 Governor John S Fine named Samuel S Lewis of York as Secretary of Forests and Waters to replace Milo F Draemel who resigned yesterday The 77 year old Lewis a longtime Republican leader and former Auditor General State Treasurer Secretary of Highways and Lieutenant Governor previously held state posts and was a personal friend of the governor
Fire damaged Beechview Hardware and Supply in Pittsburgh with $35,000 loss as flames extended to the building’s second floor. Residents nearby were driven out by smoke and the fire was controlled after hours. Meanwhile in Indiana Borough police reported eviction actions for Blairsville families facing Conemaugh dam flooding. Two 16-year-old Indiana High School girls who disappeared have returned home after a month. Eviction hearings were set for Feb 17 with Judge Gour presiding.
A fire broke out in the Indiana Evening Gazette presses late yesterday, destroying viewsprint and causing damage estimated at $300 or more. Pressmen Robert Cameron and Paul Houck noticed flames while loading new paper rolls and activated a head-extinguisher. the heat triggered an automatic sprinkler system which extinguished the blaze.
