Ship Subsidy Bill Advances In House Vote 8 to 7

Washington January 16 The House committee on commerce by an 8 to 7 vote reports favorably a ship subsidy bill drafted by Representative Littauer of New York as a substitute for Grosvenor. Seven subsidized mail lines are planned with an estimated $3.75 million annual subvention. Lines include Atlantic coast to South America, Gulf to Colon, three Pacific routes to the Orient, and one to South America's west coast. The debate also features Spooner and Tillman clashing over President Roosevelt’s authority to discharge Negro troops. The House spent the day on fortifications appropriations and announced several postmaster appointments in Pennsylvania Ohio West Virginia.
