A young North Dakota Sioux man, once hailed as an outstanding young medical hopeful, stands on death row awaiting electrocution. An Oriental vase once thought to be valuable turned out to be worth only 50 cents, a revelation tied to a rummage sale purchase. An Angeles art dealer allegedly offered 963,000 for the Ming Dynasty vase, but the real value proved negligible.
Thomas James White Hawk, a Rosebud Sioux youth educated at Shattuck School, is on death row at the South Dakota State Penitentiary for the March 24, 1967, murder of jeweler James Yeado in Vermillion. He pleaded guilty to first degree murder. supporters seek mercy and abolition of capital punishment while courts defer to the Board of Pardons and the governor.
