New York January 19 William R Willcox will continue as chairman of the Republican National Committee despite reports of his displacement. Members of the executive committee announced after a meeting that progressives on the committee were assured of continuity and leadership.
The National One Cent Letter Postage Association based in Cleveland Ohio expects passage of a lower rate by Congress this session. The plan promises saving millions for letter users while newspapers within 2300 miles are exempt due to educational value and lower stamp prices.
The governor will chair a draft of the budget and submit it to the executive before introduction. Departments have been asked to brief the executive on their desired salary adjustments. An effort aims to discourage bureau heads and staff from lobbying for their own raises. Suggestions for increases will be considered only when prompted by the department heads.
State mine inspectors estimate 1916 coal output at about 260 million net tons, with 17 million from bituminous and 46 million from anthracite regions. Total salt coal district employment reaches 171,477, with 165,089 in the anthracite area. Fatal accidents total 1,098 across bituminous and anthracite sectors, plus 1,800 non fatal in soft coal and 200 men fatal in hard coal.
