Eleven ex-convicts are indicted in Suffolk County for participation in the Brink's robbery of January 17 1950, totaling 1 219 000. A nationwide hunt is on for two men and the money while the FBI calls the case solved after six arrests.
In New York a grand jury will determine the degree of homicide in the abortion death of Jacqueline Smith. Thomas G. Daniel and Leo Pijuan face homicide charges after Miss Smith died December 24 in Daniels apartment. her body was hacked and dumped, no remains found. If convicted, the case hinges on New York abortion death statute limiting charges to first degree manslaughter with a 20 year maximum. Dr. Ramiro Morales could be key witness. Miss Smith, who hoped to be a fashion designer, moved to the city a year earlier and dated Daniel since June after she sought an abortion when six weeks pregnant and he refused marriage.
Indiana Chamber of Commerce plans its annual meeting January 25 with a by law change to keep a full slate of directors and officers. The event includes the annual banquet with Hon William R Davlin Pennsylvanias Secretary of Commerce as guest of honor and speaker. Davlin directs industrial and commercial development for the state and will discuss Indiana County and distressed areas. See Yearly Page 6. Col 7.
Police theorize a double murder followed by suicide after three bodies found in a car near a roadside club house. Victims include Elmer P Loring 28 and Mrs Melba Loring, Miss Carol Hug 20, all tied to a St Louis printing firm. McGraw 28, former husband of Miss Hug, is suspected in the killings. The gun was found between McGraw and Miss Hug, with all four victims connected by a jealous love triangle.
Five U S missionaries slain by Auca Indians were buried near their stripped Piper plane in Ecuador’s jungle. Rescue teams found the final body after a days long search. the group had sought to win local tribes to Christianity and the plane was left as a witness to their sacrifice.
Top negotiators for Westinghouse Electric Corp and the AFL CIO International Union of Electrical Workers resume talks with a federal mediator today to settle a three month strike. Union president James B Carey and Westinghouse VP Robert D Blasier took yesterday off after two days of closed sessions with mediator John R Murray in Philadelphia. Separately in Freehold New Jersey Superior Court Judge C Thomas Schettino ordered Westinghouse to inform Gwilym A Price to appear at an injunction hearing next Wednesday over a request to restrict IVE picketing at New Jersey plants. Price had not been officially notified. The judge said the union must produce officials the company wants to question and said he has no authority to subpoena Price.
