SYRACUSE Jan 14 Two children died six firemen were injured and 14 persons were made homeless after a free story frame house burned in Solvay near Syracuse. The dead are Margaret Spillane 12 and William Spillane Jr 10. Catherine James and Ellen Spillane 18 and 8 escaped unharmed.
Governor Earle promised legislation to regulate risky lending and curb “lorem sharks.” The attorney general’s office drafts the bills after a department study of small loan firms and broader consumer credit including pawnbrokers and auto finance. A $5,000 relief effort was approved by the Senate, with Thompson proposing funding for a long-term plan.

Federal agents from Johnstown said Henry T. Hanley of Altoona backed into their car causing it to overturn an embankment while they waited to arrest him on liquor violation charges. Hanley fled, was captured after a short chase, and a five gallon alcohol can was found in his car. The car and can were seized and a charge filed with U S Commissioner Walter Bartram at Altoona. Hanley remained jailed awaiting $1,000 bond.
Pittsburgh dispatch reports National Commander Harry W. Colmery of the American Legion visits disabled soldiers on his first term. He travels from Morgantown, addresses legionnaires, urges neutrality and universal conscription, and plans events in Charleroi Swissvale and Somerset with his Bellevue parents as honored guests.
Vatican City reports Pope Pius XI, recovering from illness, was moved from his sickbed to a specially built wheelchair and moved into a salon next to the Papal bedroom. He received his sister and Cardinal Pacelli in audience and attended Mass in his chapel, with attendants noting pain during the move.
