STATE COLLEGE Pa Jan 14 INS Highways harder than concrete and cheaper than macadam and easier to lay than either of them This forecast was made today by Professor Joseph B Shaw and Myril Shaw members of the faculty of Pennsylvania State College who have been working on the new road composition in recent months Professor Shaw head of the ceramic department at the college said details of the manufacturing process will be revealed at the meeting of the American Ceramics Society at Toronto next month Highways of the future according to Professor Shaw will be laid out by the utilization of the new process which employs huge bricks as large as five by twenty feet and six to eight inches deep laid on a graded earth surface just as the present concrete slab roads here One advantage of the new composition is that paving material may be manufactured anywhere that deposits of clay or whale are found in other words practically anywhere no special quality of raw material being required as for present paving brick Professor Shaw claims that once the kiln is built the manufacturing costs will be small as the process will be purely mechanical and continuous with low fuel costs and little labor required A new material was developed under the prompting of United States Senator W S Pine of Oklahoma who recently spent considerable time here with Professor Shaw outlining the new process and material
