Pittsburgh January 13 President Ralph F Jamison of the Western Pennsylvania Coal Operators Association says current capacity of 630000900 tons of coal is sufficient to supply all defense needs. He believes few new mines will be opened during the defense surge, but employment should remain steady with more workers added to payrolls.
In Saginaw Michigan a picket line clash at the Wilcox Rich division of Easton Manufacturing injured seven people and closed the plant. Police used tear gas as about 400 workers including AFL UAW members crossed a CIO UAW picket line. Five officers were hurt and two picketers injured. Patrolman Milan V Plavsic required hospital care for severe head cuts.
A Pennsylvania Railroad fireman, John Carpenter aged 42 of Cambridge, was fatally scalded when a derailed box car toppled a 325,000-pound engine 20 miles northwest of East Liverpool. Engineer Herschel Salzer, 58 of Canton, Ohio, was treated for shock after the locomotive plunged into a ditch on Salineville Hill on Saturday night.
German high command said British planes bombed southern Germany including Bayreuth home to the Wagner festival. Authorities described damage as slight and said Bayreuth’s festival house and Wagner’s burial villa were not endangered. London was hit by large fires in multiple districts.
A 19 year old truck driver faced murder charges in the hammer beating death of Dunkard minister's son Robert A. Hackman after a quarrel over a girl. Hackman's body was found beside his burning car on a mountain road near Ephrata. Police alleged the suspect admitted forcing Hackman to drive to a game preserve and beating him with his hammer.

Harrisburg January demands for separation of the Republican leadership came from two sources today but drew no reply from State Chairman James Torrance. A grass roots conference in Pittsburgh is planned for tomorrow, while W Clyde Haver Lycoming County treasurer urged an immediate meeting and a change in tactics and leaders. The board would operate in the Maternal and Child Health bureau. Governor James urged civil service expansion to five more departments in his opening address.
