John de Witt Warner argues that city government suffers from public indifference. He says voters must become interested before voting, blaming mainly well to do citizens who won't register or vote, while the masses are more aware and vote regularly.
J H Phillips Birmingham Ala argues the public school is a modern democrac y institution for all races and urges true democracy through universal education. He notes southern effort since 1870 funding for black schools exceeds 110 million dollars, urging gradual race problem handling with minimal complications.
Miss Fannie Gessler visits sister Mrs Joseph Donnelly of Latrobe and others travel or stay with relatives in Blairsville, Allegheny, Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Local officials and merchants report social visits, a tuberculosis concern for Hon. S. J. Csaighfeld, and Prof James F Chapmans town inspection. Also notices of sleighs stock and local shopping trips in Saltsburg and Creekside.
A J Cassatt and Samuel Rea of Pennsylvania Rail Road spoke with President Roosevelt on proposed railroad rate legislation. Cassatt said the talk touched the matter briefly and he would not disclose details. Senator McComas discussed rate legislation and urged action, noting time remains in the current session and no need for an extraordinary session.
Jefferson City Jan 13 The Democratic caucus nominates Francis M Cockrell to seek another term as U S senator with the legislature now Republican on joint ballot. A Neidringhaus corruption inquiry looms and Democrats hope GOP defectors back Cockrell to avert Republican victory. Roosevelt’s friendship with Cockrell is cited as boosting his prospects.
New Governor Douglas seeks settlement for six month strike of 000 cotton mill operatives in Fall River Massachusetts. Union secretaries plan meetings to consider empowering the textile council to act on settlement proposals without referendum. Governor's investigator continues work and has gathered varied information.
Washington January 13 nearly the entire day in the Smoot investigation was devoted to testimony on Idaho political conditions. Frank Martin and F H Holeheimer Idaho Democrats testified most opposed to an unnecessary attack on the Mormon church as caused by the anti polygamy plank. Janica Brady Republican state chair charged Democrats used to gain votes for Republicans.
