County commission new board moves to buy groceries for the County Home and Willard Home from Indiana County wholesale grocers on a competitive basis. Officials will submit weekly grocery lists to county wholesale firms, ending non competitive purchases and outsiders’ influence.
Stephen Kokolis 42 of Pittsburgh was exonerated of stealing his 74 year old father Sam Kokolis savings from a strong box at his Homer City home. Police continue to investigate the missing funds, initially reported as 17500 but later estimated at 5700.
A stray dog at a Canandaigua Thruway interchange caused a fuss when Deputy Alan Johnston picked up the animal after it refused to pay a ten cent toll. Thruway officials say toll police should have been summoned. Johnston will return the dime and the toll collector may receive the credit.
Washington Triangle Publications Inc of Philadelphia received authorization from the Communications Commission to purchase station WFBG and WFBG-TV at Altoona Pennsylvania for 2 600 000 Triangle Publications also publishes the Philadelphia Inquirer and runs broadcasting stations in New York and Pennsylvania
NEW YORK A young salesman is held as a material witness in the baffling disappearance of 20 year old Jacqueline Smith. After questioning two men authorities call the case almost certainly a criminal homicide. Thomas G. Daniels 24 dated Miss Smith since last June and is held in 25000 bail. She vanished after visiting his apartment Christmas Eve. Daniels gave conflicting stories from suicide to dumping her body into the Hudson River. Police believe the girl is dead.
The Altoona Tribune publishes a 60 page edition celebrating its 100th anniversary. Founded in 1856 it became a daily in 1873 and is owned by Times Tribune Publishing Co. Theodore Arter Jr. is president with A B Crane as vice president and publisher. Eagles Party tonight.
Washington AP reports Eisenhower refrained from pledging assent or dissent to adding his name in Illinois preferential primary. Despite hints of a possible bid, his exact decision remains unclear. Doctors say mid February for recovery clarity. Illinois sets April 10 for presidential preference. Gov Stratton announced the entry.
Concord New Hampshire reports that President Eisenhower will formally have his name entered in the first in the nation presidential primary next week. An AP source says Governor Lane and Dwinell will file petitions with the secretary of state Monday morning bearing 100 signatures. The White House confirms Eisenhower approves and will publicly state it next week.
Springfield dispatch reports Dr Avard Fairbanks a Utah sculptor chosen by the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Commission to build a $35000 bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln beardless as he appeared in Chicago in 1860. The statue to stand in Lincoln Square will be 114 times larger than Lincoln's actual measurements.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to provide 1% billion dollars in federal grants over five years to tackle the national school shortage. He also sought authority to buy up to 750 million dollars in local school bonds and 200 million dollars for state school planning grants, totaling about two billion over the period.
Detroit publishers association and three striking unions reached a tentative two year contract today, edging toward an early end to Detroit’s 43 day newspaper strike. If approved, talks with remaining unions proceed quickly and the papers are expected to resume by Monday though a spokesman warned there is no chance of publication before then.
Maj. Gen. Byron E. Gates, 80, former Chanule Air Force Base commander, was fined 500 and reprimanded for giving preferential treatment to private insurers for personal profit. He received 1294 dollars monthly during a six month recall, with a total profit of 2440 dollars after the penalty.

President Eisenhower plans to send Congress a balanced budget that allows higher spending, signaling rising outlays in coming years. Based on the State of the Union and official pronouncements, the budget foresees spending between 651/4 and 66 billion dollars, at least equal income, and requests for appropriations well above projected spending.
Fresno police said Mrs Vidella Caroline McNamara 33 shot and killed her two sons Patrick 5 and James R 3 and herself using a 40-30 hunting rifle. The bodies were found when the husband and two other sons returned home. Police Chief Elden Winslow said she had periodic treatment for a nervous condition.

A first time 4-H potato judging team won first place, with Betty Jean Clawson Herman Blakley and Harold Behm leading their county. Leader Blackcap Lady 2 won grand champion in beef cattle. Sidney Duroc Jersey and Yorkshire divisions produced multiple top finishes for McConaughey Gehm Winebark. Board seats were earned on Chester White Swine and Pennsylvania Horse and Mule associations. Mrs Beatty H Dimit reported on the National Grange convention and rural living changes. Janice Marshall participated in an FHA entertainment skit attracting nearly 2,000 members.
Britain airlifted about 2000 paratroops to Cyprus as a show of strength amid Middle East tensions. The airborne force will reinforce a Cypriot garrison of around 100,000 and serve as a mobile unit to rush to trouble spots if British lives or property are threatened. Brig A M H Butler led the lead plane as heavy rain clouds escorted the sorties, with the operation expected to finish by tomorrow night.
Kalamazoo Michigan. In a farm home Jeannie Schuster died after a wasp sting triggered anaphylactic shock. Parents Ivan and his wife found the child unconscious and a wasp uncovered beneath the bed. A doctor said the insect sting caused the death.
Speedy Service DAYTON Ohio report notes Mrs Anna Reineke 74 was struck crossing a street. Deputies say she was in a hospital for a broken leg less than three minutes after the collision. An ambulance returning to the hospital was behind the taxi.
Harrisburg AP. Gov. Leader proposed that Republicans back a sales tax to raise about 25214 million dollars, matching the administration plan. Senate Chairman Kessler immediately rejected the idea, opposing any income tax or higher business taxes. The governor said Republicans would provide votes in the House to pass a tax program and in return would seek a majority in the Senate for their sales tax plan.
A Quito radio report says two of five U S missionaries seized by Auca Indians were believed dead after sighting of waving women on a Amazon river beach. A local pilot photographed the group but identity unclear. Air Force rescue helicopter to inspect the area. Missionaries named: Nathaniel Saint Huntingdon Valley PA, James Elliott Portland OR, Edward McCulley Milwaukee WI, Roger Youderian Lansing MI, Peter Fleming Seattle WA.
