Dewitt Mackenzie reviews wartime outlook saying the early Pacific gains may prove brief as Japan could unleash intensified resistance and terror. He notes British and American losses, Japan's strong continental footholds, potential Soviet entry, and the need to prepare for renewed, sweeping military efforts to force Japan to quit.
Prince Cyril, former regent of Bulgaria, told a Sofia people's court he believes King Boris was poisoned by the Germans. He testified Boris wore a mask treated with a strong solution after visiting Hitler's headquarters, and then died. Berlin radio announced the death on August 26, 194?.
Managing editor Wright Bryan of the Atlanta Journal is reported safe in a German POW camp. He was wounded and captured on Sept. 12 near the Third Army front in France while serving as a war correspondent. Capt. Chester McAdams also reported to be captured and safe with him.
Pennsylvania dairy and potato groups warn that a broader draft of farm workers could slash 1945 output. Dairymen urge Selective Service to protect bonafide dairy and farm labor, while potato growers say 18 to 25 year olds are essential to harvest and mechanized operations. The groups also push state funding for animal industry research and tuberculosis eradication.
Soviet forces tighten cordon on Pest as German efforts to relieve Budapest fail. Tolbukhin strengthens positions while 16,000 Germans and about 650 tanks have been sacrificed in ten days. Prisoners say German artillery nears exhaustion and supply lines break under Red assaults.
Allied forces press the Ardennes break as Third Army reaches St. Hubert and guards evacuations. German withdrawals widen across the salient with British units linking with American troops near Houffalize and Vesqueville. Hodges is relieved after stiff resistance and heavy fighting continues near Vielsalm and St Vith.
A large Kittanning Presbytery attendance met in Elderton Presbyterian Church for a two session winter meeting. The group approved budget details for mission benevolence, welcomed Rev. Homer G. ELAS forces withdraw from designated areas, exchange prisoners with British, and release detained civilians except certain groups. Archbishop Damaskinos condemned the hostage policy and noted the shift of ELAS forces in the Peloponnesus and surrounding areas.
The War Production Board orders drastic new limits on civilian goods, sharply cutting metal allocations for consumer projects under the spot reconversion program. With manpower tight and materials scarce, many areas see suspension or denial of new applications, risking non manufacture of already approved consumer items despite prior authorization.
Howard Beck County Boy, longtime radio engineer and executive, began with 8BQ in Indiana Pa during the early 1920s. He later led design and installation for Westmoreland Broadcasting, consulted for many Pennsylvania stations, and rose to chief inspector at Farnsworth Fort Wayne in 1942. He served as field engineer, helped develop war communications gear, and held roles in Radio Institute of Engineers Fort Wayne Radio Club and Camera Club.

Cpl. Charles M. Segar of Indiana Pennsylvania, an assistant foreman in a platoon of engineers rebuilding a bridge in Germany, ducked under a concrete slab as planes and machine gun fire passed overhead. His unit, bivouacked near American artillery, arrived in France December 14 and had previously built a bridge in Belgium’s buzz-bomb country. Segar, married to Thelma Segar, worked in steel mills before enlisting November 10, 1941, and trained at Camp Grant, Illinois.
