An advertisement promotes a two pound trial of heart disease treatment by Dr Franklin Miles offering a free book and free examination. It claims centuries of research and urges afflicted individuals to request the book, describe their disease, and seek free treatment at his Elkhart Indiana address.
Berlin voters go to polls as Socialists show confidence across the empire. In Berlin the party seems sure to retain five of six districts they hold. One notable voter is Domroski, a 108 year old farmer, who plans to cast his ballot for the Socialists.
A dispatch from Kuldju in Chinese Turkestan reports a republican uprising led by a Chinese general. Rebels seized the arsenal and fortress, killing three hundred Manchus including the governor. A school was burned and fifty seven children inside perished.
The steamship Russ, built for the Black Sea trade, sank during a heavy gale off Galatz Odessa route. Of 172 aboard including crew and passengers, only wreckage and no survivors reported. Russian consul general Carl Amuse was among the drowned. Agele’s gale worsened the wreck.

A nose glasses pair with chain was lost on North Philadelphia street between Ninth and Smith's milk depot with finder told to leave at Gazette office. An open face silver watch with black silk fob and initials P GO M, lost with pin, should be left at Gazette office or with Effie M. Orr in Normal.
Paris January 12 Robert Bacon ambassador from the United States admitted he mailed his resignation to President Taft He will accept Harvard fellowship to succeed the late Judge Lowell at Cambridge Massachusetts and depart for that post after confirmation of the academic grant
Princeton N J Jan 12 The trustees of Princeton University elected John Grier Hibben fourteenth president to succeed Woodrow Wilson. Hibben, Princeton Class of 1888, has taught since 1891 and holds the Stuart chair of logic. Alumni and students hailed the choice with wild acclaim as a parade formed to Hibben’s house. He spoke of gratification at his election and the students’ enthusiasm.
In Indianapolis Judge Albert B. Anderson discharged William J. Burns from custody after argument over the writ of habeas corpus. The ruling releases Burns from the kidnapping indictment returned by the county grand jury concerning J. J. McNamara. Attorneys say the decision also applies to Detective Kosick of Los Angeles, indicted on the same charge.
In January heat claim a death at a mill where D. J. McCarthy worked. He collapsed in a drying room from extreme heat within ten minutes, despite bitter outdoor cold. Also reported are the burial of David Cherry aged ninety, longtime Blair County almshouse resident, with funds from a Kansas-based rich brother.
