Old Whaling Leader Schupp Dies at 80
William P. Schupp, 80, longtime head of the Pacific American Whaling Company and a key figure in American whaling, died after a heart seizure hours after claiming in a newspaper interview that much of the firm’s property disappeared from Akutan Island during World War II. He had discussed a $75,000 damage claim filed with the 18th Naval District. The Navy had loaned the Akutan Whaling Station to Russians as a lend-lease fueling base. Admiral George L. Russell said the claim had not been settled to the Navy’s satisfaction.
