Airmen Hit Own Troops in Malmedy Bombing Error
Allied air attacks caused heavy damage to Malmedy, a Belgian town of 5,000, just before Christmas. American bombers struck on Dec 23, followed by a larger force on Dec 24. Civilians and soldiers were killed. American troops reportedly held the town despite German proximity. The London News Chronicle noted Germans also bombed their own troops nearby.
