Stephen Miller Minnesota governor and Civil War officer

Stephen Miller editor soldier and governor born January 7 1816 in Carroll Township Perry County Pennsylvania. He built a career in milling shipping and politics, edited a Whig paper and served as Dauphin County prothonotary later moving to Minnesota in 1858. He led the 1st Minnesota as lieutenant colonel then colonel, fought at Bull Run and on the frontier, became brigadier general, was governor from 1864 to 1866 and later involved in railroad work and state legislature, dying August 18 1888 at Worthington Minnesota.

Penn State Poultry Short Course Opens February 2

Penn State College announces the fourth annual Poultry Short Course starting February 2 with beginners attending the first week on poultry incubation feeding marketing judging and diseases. The second week February 9 to 13 offers advanced work and problem discussions with lab practice using the college plant stock and equipment including an 18 000 egg incubator and other incubators on display. Over 1 600 fowls in the pens represent top local stock for production and standards.

Willson Named Penn Football Captain for 1925

Joseph P. Willson of Corning New York was elected captain of the 1925 University of Pennsylvania football team. He succeeds Rae McGraw who graduates in June and Wikksen who has been nursing a sprain. Willson plays at left tackle and is a 22 year old junior. The Red and Blue team arrived in Albuquerque after their Pacific coast trip.

No Poultry Excluded From State Exhibit at Harrisburg

The 1925 State Farm Products Show in Harrisburg will exclude all poultry due to a fowl plague in eastern shipments. Egg exhibits and other features proceed as usual with eggs expected to exceed 1,000 dozen. The Electric Farm display and expanded space for fruit, potatoes, corn, grain, tobacco, dairy, honey, eggs, and swine are planned. Pennsylvania farm groups urged to contact county agents to secure reduced railroad rates and certificates for attendance.

Visits and a death noted in regional brief items

Elizabeth Grumley of Migs visited the Quay Lewis home in Cherry Tree over the weekend. Don Langham visited brothers Max and Rex in Barnesboro on Sunday. John D. Garman, former resident, died in Florida aged 80. Interment followed at Stiffle Cemetery.
