Five Ohio Coal Firms Sue Lewis for Eight Million Damages

Five Eastern Ohio coal firms filed five suits in Common Pleas Court seeking nearly 8 million dollars against John L. Lewis and other United Mine Workers leaders and the union treasury. The actions allege tonnage losses from miner strikes and work stoppages in 1949 and name several UMW officers. Additional suits in Columbus would bring total damages to about 10 million.

Three Homer City Churches Plan Joint Christmas Services

The Homer City parishioners will join St Michael of Homer City St Libury of Clymer and St Pauls of Hellwood for Christmas observances. Torrance Inmate Found Near Here

Anna Poldy, 51, an escaped inmate of the Torrance State Hospital, was found along the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks between Home Acres and Lucerne, suffering exposure. Indiana State Police and Deputy Sheriff Don McMullen located her. she was returned to Indiana and later back to Torrance. She had escaped January 1.

Fire Claims Five Children in Missoula Blaze

A flash fire in a near zero degree Missoula home killed five children and seriously burned Jim Parish who cared for them. Eleven children resided there. four others escaped as flames spread through the two story house at about 3:30 a.m. The Molenda family was away in Spokane, leaving Jim Parish to care for the youngsters.

A 13 year old girl in Los Angeles told officers a half hour of horror during which a youth about 15 carved figure eights on her chest with a knife after forcing her to disrobe partially. Dynamite Discoverer Abducted in Detroit

In Detroit on January 6 a night watchman, William Thomas, was abducted at 5 a.m. and found later tied and exposed beside the Rouge River. He had discovered 39 sticks of dynamite outside the CIO Unit Auto Workers Headquarters on December 20, a plan police suspect tied to the Reuther shootings.
