A separate Indiana fire destroyed a Parkwood Road home leaving six children homeless. the Schrecengost family escaped via windows with minor injuries. The Salvation Army and Red Cross assisted as fire crews fought the blaze.
Borough police arrested two men for soliciting without a license on Tuesday evening. Melvin Kirstien, 28, of Altoona, and Jack Evans, 33, of Colchester, Conn., had no borough permits and were sent for a hearing before Justice Albert M. Cox. Each paid a $10 fine plus costs. John Taylor, Social Security District Manager in Indiana, announced that the 1966 contribution rate rises to 4.2 percent, with 0.35 percent funding hospital insurance. The annual earnings cap increases from 4800 to 6600 dollars, affecting workers at various income levels.
South Korean Marines and Vietnamese paratroopers stormed caves and tunnels near Tuy Hoa in Phu Yen Province, claiming 278 Viet Cong killed over five days. Air and artillery support aided advances as Communist counterattacks failed to halt the operation.
A federal grand jury indicted Bobby Baker former secretary to Senate Democrats on nine counts of tax evasion conspiracy and related offenses. He allegedly understated income by 54558.91 for 1961 and 1962 and evaded taxes. The indictment was announced by Attorney General Katzenbach.
Bethlehem Steel Co. reverses the $5 per ton price increase on structural steel amid government pressure. Vice President E. D. Bickford says the firm will reexamine the market after United States Steel’s price changes become clear. U S Steel had raised prices $2.75 per ton and the White House deemed it acceptable.
Washington AP report says President Johnson and chief economist Gardner Ackley found acceptable a $2.75 per ton rise from U S Steel after Bethlehem Steel and Inland Steel had posted higher increases. Bethlehem rescinded its rise and Inland awaited details before possible revision.
Robert Wazelle of Punxsutawney was found guilty in a morals case by the Indiana County Court. The verdict came after concluding arguments on the third day of the criminal court before Judge Edwin M. Clark. The session continued with Cecil Fay Melvin facing a receiving stolen goods charge.
Obituaries note Walter John Kenjerski aged 55 of NuMine and Bertha J Hood aged 78 of Pitcairn. The notices appear on page 2 under Derths Obituaries.
Reed I Beatty leaves the Indiana Evening Gazette after a 49 year career beginning as a printer's devil in 1916. He witnessed the paper grow from a 500 subscriber startup to a leading hometown daily near 15 000 circulation. Beatty learned the linotype trade early and spent most of his tenure on the machine.
U S Steel Corp announced a 2.75 a ton increase on structural steel, a move joined by other producers and labeled inflationary by the government. The company also cut cold rolled sheet prices by 9 a ton at its Pittsburg California plant, a six percent reduction.
Western Pennsylvania coal miners urge the United Mine Workers Union to reopen the national contract in April to seek higher wages and fringe benefits. A resolution was passed by 130 delegates at the UMW District 5 convention, noting the contract can be reopened starting April 1 with 66 days notice.
