Federal agents swept through the narcotics underworld seizing 500 suspected dope peddlers as part of a broad dragnet. Narcotics Commissioner Harry J. Anslinger said more captures of national racket kings are expected within weeks while a grand jury proceeds.
Indiana County civil defense directors survey communities today to locate bomb shelters for a potential air attack. Paul Woodring says shelters will be set up wherever possible. Dominick Violi assigns Police Chief Howard Sanford to designate shelters in the borough. Sanford notes basement floors of businesses from Fifth to Ninth streets are being inspected to find ideal locations. Shelters will be marked and a mock alert will soon test public response and street clearance.
Washington January 5 The government has until February 2 to resolve the steel dispute threatening the defense program. The United Steelworkers Union voted to shelve its walkout for 45 days starting Monday, amid pressure from President Truman. The Wage Stabilization Board begins a fact finding process to propose settlement terms acceptable to both steel companies and about 650000 union workers. A procedural meeting sets the stage for the board's work with the real negotiations to start Thursday.
Frayed tempers flare as UN and Communist negotiators at Panmunjom exchange sharp accusations over policing the armistice. Maj. Gen. Turner and Chinese Maj. Gen. Haieh Fang trade barbs as no progress is reported. A proposed airlift plan, Operation Homecoming, aims to return POWs from Korea to the United States via Japan or Alaska routes, with medical checks and fast repatriation for healthy prisoners, while release terms remain unsettled.

Blairsville James Marsh 67 walking along William Penn Highway two miles west of Blairsville was fatally injured as motorist Dan A. Maurer 67 of Fairmont West Virginia failed to see him until about 15 feet away. Marsh died about four hours later at Latrobe Hospital after the 5:45 p.m. incident. Investigators were checking to determine the actual cause of the mishap.
State Teachers College Indi ana will hold final semester examinations January 14 to 17 per Dr Ralph Heiges dean of instruction. Regular registration for the second semester runs January 22 to 23 with classes starting January 24.
The Western Union office in Indiana announced cables may now be sent to servicemen and women in Europe including members of the 28th Division. Cables may reach units with APO 35 110 or 111.
Lebanon Pa January 5 J G Allen 56 superintendent of the Scotland School for veterans children since 1941 died after a long illness He had been a patient at the veterans Hospital since November with a heart condition.
Mrs. Geraldine Hudson, aged 14, gave birth yesterday to a six pound 14 ounce son at Metropolitan Hospital. Both mother and child are reported well after a Caesarean delivery. Father Sanford Hudson, 19, a machinist, said he and Geraldine wed last year after eloping to Arlington Virginia.
AP reporting from Washington states the United States and Allies warn Red China that violations of any Korea armistice would invite air and naval punishment. The issue at Panmunjom centers on supervision to ensure observance, with Communists opposing a ban on new North Korean airfields near the Yalu River.
An Associated Press report describes a mix of snow sleet and freezing rain across Pennsylvania with temperatures near freezing. Up to three inches of snow created deep slush as a weather bureau warned of hazardous driving conditions.

Harry W. Truitt was freed from Allegheny Workhouse after serving ten months of a four year term for assault. His wife Roseanne Banks posted 3000 bail. Pennsylvania Supreme Court set aside the conviction, ruling the case was political, not criminal. The charges stemmed from pushing a New Kensington police officer and taking the officer’s telephone in Truitt’s home.

An explosion near Pittsburgh leveled a two story residence at 122 Penn Vista Drive in Penn Township. In the William Vowles home, two people reportedly escaped with slight injuries. The blast blasted the front porch of the adjacent Paul Nelson house and shattered windows at Donald R. Towle’s 114 Penn Vista home.
West Frankfort Illinois miners vow to return to Orient No 2 as soon as it reopens after a pre Christmas explosion that killed 119 workers. United Mine Workers local president Sherman Whitlow says workers must not sit back and will go back to the mine despite the disaster. Mayor C Edwin Hair of Benton comments on the community impact.

Department heads see hikes from 2,750 to 5,000 dollars, with various offices ranging up to 9,500. A search for two 16 year old girls from Indiana area is underway. Mary Lavonne Tate and Mary Lou Ruccock are missing since Wednesday. Tate may be en route to Pittsburgh area or Great Lakes Naval Station. Ruccock is described with red hair and freckles. Police ask anyone with information to contact local authorities.
Recorder of Deeds John B. Lowry said his office registered about 1000 more documents in 1981 than the prior year. Last year 4156 deeds powers of attorney commissions and charters were filed, compared with 3138 in 1950 and 2875 in 1949, and mortgages were about 250 fewer than in 1950 when 560 were filed.
