Bhutto Plans Unconditional Release Of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Radio Pakistan reported East Pakistan leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman would be freed after more talks with President Bhutto. Bhutto addressed a Karachi crowd asking permission for the release, urged India talks for regional peace, and warned that Pakistan would defend itself if India attacked.

Nixon hints at reelection with Agnew running mate

President Nixon signaled a 1972 reelection bid with Spiro Agnew as his VP pick. In a televised interview he said he will announce by Jan 14 and expects continued troop withdrawals from Vietnam, with a residual force to secure POWs. Income Tax Cram Course Now Available

The government cram course on filling out income tax forms goes on sale this month at 15,000 post offices. The Postal Service said the booklet Your Federal Income Tax will cost 75 cents a copy and will be on sale at first and second class post offices. It includes a sample Form 1040 with explanations for filling in each line.

New Year's Eve Fire Blamed On Cigarette Cigarette Start Hits Two Indiana Women

Two Indiana women died from smoke asphyxia in a New Year’s Eve fire at 1372 Water Street. Fire officials blamed a smoldering cigarette left in a living room couch for the blaze that damaged the two story home. Florence J. Bunyan and Mabel M. McDonnell, sisters aged 63 and 66, were found on the second floor. Authorities noted no electrical fault and said the fire was confined to the living room though smoke and heat damaged the interior. The incident was reported by Borough police and Citizens Ambulance Service. Obituaries appear in today’s Indiana Evening Gazette.

Police say a slick gang used a black limousine to distract guards and entered the Pierre on Fifth Avenue at 61st Street. They reportedly took more than $1 million in cash and jewelry from 47 safe deposit boxes. Detectives linked the robbery to a prior $15,000 Drake Hotel heist. The hotel occupies a luxury block overlooking Central Park.
