An Air Force rescue team plucked U2 pilot Charles Stratton, 32, from a swamp near Picayune Mississippi after a crash from a flight from Del Rio Texas to Birmingham Alabama. Stratton was taken by ambulance to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi Mississippi. The wreckage of the U2 remained sought in the swamp west of Picayune near the Louisiana Mississippi border. The plane belonged to the 4050th Strategic Wing at Laughlin AFB. Witnesses saw the crash from New Orleans, 75 miles away.
