President Truman moves to reorganize the Internal Revenue Bureau as Congress prepares to return. At least 53 more employees were fired or suspended, raising 1951 totals to 166 compared with 40 in 1950 and 36 in 1949. Many lawmakers divided on the plan.
Captain Kurt Carlsen, at 87, remains aboard the damaged freighter Flying Enterprise as a new North Atlantic storm threatens its buoyancy. The U S destroyer John W Weeks stands by with rescue plans while Carlsen refuses to abandon ship and comforts rescuers over the danger they face.
Atlantic City New Jersey Philip Murray president of the CIO United Steelworkers hinted a crippling steel strike is unlikely even as 2,500 delegates opened the convention. He expects to attend the Wage Stabilization Board hearing in Washington Monday and observers foresee postponement of any strike as mills continue to serve defense and civilian needs. Murray declined to disclose recommendations from the union policy body and left unclear whether they will be submitted at the opening session or require a further meeting.
The office of Sheriff Paul W Jeffries faces a second term after his four years ending Dec 31 in Indiana County. He oversaw 2 058 inmates, with 1 972 men and 86 women, whose dispositions included 74 to Allegheny Workhouse and 53 to Torrance State Hospital among other placements. Inmates consumed 75 486 meals under his custody.
Gordon Hellman of Chambersville Indiana is in Indiana Hospital after a mining accident at the Lebrato Coal Camping mine four miles north of Indiana. His left hand was amputated after getting caught in an augur type cutting machine. An acetylene torch was used to free the hand. Hellman, 35, had his wrist crushed. The mine is owned by Joseph W. Lebrato of Indiana.
Commissions for 18 Indiana County justices of the peace elected in the November 6 balloting arrived at Recorder John B. Lowry’s office. Recipients must pick up within 60 days or the commissions return to Harrisburg. Names include Eldon Gordon, Lynn Shields, Paul McGillick, Harvey Rowland, Harold Ranch, C. J. Oakes, James McCullough, Glen Hensell, Walter Jackson, Merle Neal, and others from multiple townships.
In Philadelphia a Betsy Ross postage stamp went on sale after a ceremony at the house on Arch Street honoring her role in stitching the first American flag at the Continental Government's request. A Betsy Ross Memorial official announced substantial evidence of Ross's flagmaking, amid broader notes on the Betsy Ross legend. Indiana County recorded 13 traffic fatalities in 1951 plus 182 injuries in 125 crashes. Property loss reached about 207,234 with December losses at 11,970. State Police logged 687 complaints, 682 traffic arrests, and 143 criminal arrests, noting exclusions of several townships from the jurisdiction.

Two Indiana County vocational agriculture teachers Robert E. Steffy of Marion Center and Kenneth W. Weister of Elders Ridge will receive the Keystone Farmer Degree at the Pennsylvania Future Farmers of America State Farm Show on January 14 in Harrisburg. Steffy has taught at Marion Center since 1938 and heads the program. Weister has taught at Elders Ridge since 1944. Their students have won numerous county regional and state honors, with Steffy seeing 12 and Weister 10 students achieve the Keystone Farmer Degree. Both teachers belong to the state and national vocational groups, with Weister also active in livestock breeder associations.
Last year the fair paid competitors $54,476 across 24 departments. This year the prize pool rises to $55,100 with heavier emphasis on youth activities and several new contests to brighten five days and four nights of the show’s operation.
The Robinson Community Club reelected all officers at its Monday night reorganization meeting. Eighty two Indiana County youths are ordered to take pre induction physicals next month to help meet the state's nine thousand six hundred eighty man February draft quota. Selective Service headquarters in Harrisburg issued the directive yesterday.
Indiana County records show marriages and divorces fell over two years. In 1951 there were 508 marriage licenses issued, down from 504 in 1950 and far below 602 in 1949. Divorce counts also declined, with 32 filings in the latest month versus 44 prior, and 37 divorces last year down from 48 the year before.
